Bald Spots!

Our 8 month old has been getting bald spots on her back legs, back, ribs, neck for several months now. The vet has done scrapings on the spots over the course of their appearance and the tests come back negative for parasites, fungus, mange, etc.

She said that sometimes pure breeds get the bald patches and there is nothing to be done. We are having a very hard time believing this.

Tae did get hives once and had to have antihistamine and cortisone injections. Could they be connected?

Has anyone had any experience with this? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

same problem with my 11 month old

I have seen the same problem with my 11 month old female. She isn't scratching it and the tests have all come back negative... anyone with suggestions, insight, I would also appreciate it.

I was having the same problems with Lexi. I asked for a full thryoid panel to be run. They stated she was too young and didn't look like your typical thyroid dog...but lo and behold she came back slightly low on her T4's. She has been supplemented with soloxine twice a day and no longer has bald spots :)

My Tyson got bald spots and scabs after he had an allergic reaction. My vet said it was a staff infection from the allergic reaction. He was on antibiotics for a month. Now he has some again and is going to the vet Wednesday.I will let you know what the vet says this time.

Recurrent skin problems are common in hypothyroid dogs. Lexi had alot of skin irritants before she started her supplementation :)

I have been having the same problem with our 3 year old Fawn. She started having regionalized hair loss on her sides and back about 3 months ago. Our vet said it may be stress from a new baby which is 4 months old. It has been getting worse and I wanted a second opinion and took her to another vet. They did a Thyroid test and it was a bit low, so they are reccommending Soloxin or Foloxin. Apparently it is a hypothyroid problem. They are alos suggesting putting her on melatonin as well until it clears up. Bottom line, make sure you get a secone opinion if the answer sounds unacceptable. I sure do hope this stuff works. She is such a beautiful dog. To see this hair loss is upsetting. Good luck.
