Bailey's eye

Yesterday, I took Bailey to the vet and she has a scratch on her cornea. She prescribed antibiotics twice a day. Has this ever happend to anyone else? We just got a new puppie. She is nine weeks old and I think she accidently scratched Bailey's eye while playing. Any thoughts?

Yes this is a problem you see with boxers, due to there style of play, keep pups nails short, it's good training for later on anyway. Keep watch on her eye even though you have seen a vet. I had a boxer with the same problem but her eye was healing to fast, so we had to change drops. She should be just fine, mine was! Cindy

Well, I had a follow up vet appointment today and things are worse. The eye doesn't seem to bother her yet it is not healing. The vet said it is getting bigger and she can't see any blood vessels going to the eye to heal it. She referred me to an eye doctor. She said that she doesn't have the right equipment to test and magnifie the eye to see exactly what is going on. I am very upset by this news and not sure what to think. If anyone has any advice please let me know. I can use all the help I can get right now. Thanks.

eye injury

My veteran Trudi had 3 corneal ulcers, each time we had to have the surface of her eye debrided and the third eyelid stitched over
to help the healing process.
Trudi's ulcers were caused by my pup (at the time) playing
with her and keep putting her paws in Trudi's face.
The eye ointment that they gave did not work.
Now that pup is fully grown and has pups of her own so we will
have to be very careful not to have a repeat performance.
Trudi's eye healed very well and hasn't given her any bother
since the last episode which was over two years ago.

Thanks for the info. My vet did not say if they were ulcers or not. What did it look like when it happend to Trudi? Was it very expensive? Is the procedure surgery and do they have to be put under? The ointment that we have has not worked either. Thanks for the info.

Hi Bridget, Just wondered if you found a different vet? or went to the specialist yet? hope you can get in quick.....you don't want to wait with the eyes....they always give you a quote up front so don't be afraid of the costs.....maybe it won't be as bad as your vet thought, since he or she didn't have the correct tools needed to give thorough evaluation.....think positive, let us know. Baileys Eye

Bridget,
Yes Trudi had to go under g.a.
When they debride the surface of the eye.
It means they scrape the surface of the eye, this helps
promote the healing process.
They then normally stitch over the third eyelid to protect the
surface and further promote healing.
Some vets will also put over the corneal surface a contact lens
after they debride the surface.
Trudi had this once but managed to knock the lens out.
You have to be careful that the dog does not rub it's eye.
some dogs have to wear the elizabethan collar (or lampshade)
round their neck to stop this. Trudi won't wear one so I had
to make sure that I or someone was around all day.
The boxer is prone to corneal ulcer injury. If you do a search
via web you will find much informative information. (I cannot find my files to guide you to the ones I found most helpful).
I am in the UK so vet fees are probably quite different, I am also lucky that I have my dogs insured so only had to pay the first £40 excess for her operations.

Thanks for the info. I will research it. I think she would be ok wearing the collar. It's very hard to watch the puppy and stop her from playing around her face. Thanks again. Hopefully things go well. She has an appointment this week and I will find out more.

Thanks to everyone that responded. I just got back from the eye vet. She had a gird keratotomy?? They did the scraping thing on her eye and she is doing ok. She did not have to be put under, just a shot of anesthesia for the pain. The vet said it went very well, was not infected and should heal within a week. Again, thank you everyone for your support!!!
