I had the Boxers out in our fenced in back yard today it has been real cool here lately and they love to all play together outside. My dogs do not usually bark at the norm I.E: people walking down the road, kids on bikes, cars, or other dogs going about their own business. They could care less about whats going on outside their fence really.
I hear them raising 3 kinds of cane today, I looked outside and this group of 5 or 6 kids (guessing age 17-9) are standing in the road in a line looking at our dogs. Our fence runs parallel to the road on one side, but the fence is about 10 ft back from the road.
The next thing I know, the kids threw a basketball hitting the fence where my dogs are at!!!!!! (I figure they had been doing it but I didnt hear the dogs until I went to the laundry room) I FLEW out the door and yelled HEY you wont torment my dogs, and I also told them that those dogs could easily clear that fence if they want to, in a real angry way. URGH! I WAS P.O'd!!!!!! The dogs were really upset after that. GEEZ!! Where do these hellions come from!! Did their parents not teach them better than to do that? My dogs COULD clear that fence if they wanted to bad enough, it is only a 3 ft (maybe 4) chain link fence. Now, I am afraid the dogs will start paying more attn to whats going on outside of their "world".
The kids/hellions apologized and went on their way. Hubby said I should have called the dogs over to the gate and pretended like I was going to let them out, and watch those kids climb a tree!! What gives?????
:o  :(

Just Breate and count to 1,000

Don't want Moe back in puppy jail! I totally understand your frustration, at least they apologized, that's more than some of these brats running around will do! I hope the babies forget all about it! But I would keep an eye on them for a few days just incase! Plus they may have been trying to gauge how friendly or mean your babies are for other reasons, like stealing them.

I had a little brat threaten to sick his dog on me a few years ago, and I let mommie and daddy know that in no uncertain terms if I ever crossed his path again, I would call animal control and have their pit bull taken from them. Of course that was an unprovoked threat. But be careful what you say to these hooligans, who knows what runs through their heads. So, not to compare your situation with my past experience, but there is one of the other sides to consider!!

Good Luck

We've had lots of problems with neighbours and kids regarding our dogs. They even used to torment my sweet cocker spaniel. I truly believe that these kids aren't taught any better. These kids were also kicking the ball against the fence. Often when the ball came over the fence, the children would tease the dog up one end of the yard, while another would climb the fence to get the ball.

When we got sick of it, we kept a ball that was thrown over our fence and told the kids if they wanted it back they would have to ask their parent to collect it. When the dad showed up, Pat (hubby) told him that we wouldn't tolerate their kids trespassing and tormenting our dog. The next ball that came over could be picked up at the police station.

Unfortunately with large dogs, the onus is on US to control our "animals". Perhaps if these kids were parented half as well as our dogs there wouldn't be a problem at all.

For now we've handled our situation by improving our fences (very expensive) and we have also enrolled our dogs in beginners obedience. Pretty much doing everything we can to avoid a problem, and should one arise we can clearly be seen as the responsible party.

With these hellions be very careful around Halloween that they don't do anything stupid. Especially check your yard the day after Halloween for anything dangerous. Do your children know these kids?

I'd just be careful letting the dogs play outside without being watched. Kids that age are "funny" (not funny-haha, but funny-odd) sometimes, they can be really bratty and try to get back at you just to see what happens. Especially with Halloween coming up, more excuse for acting up. I have a 13 year old son, and some of the neighborhood kids his age are not kids I want to be on the bad side of. Plus check your yard everyday, you don't want to find something poisonous or dangerous thrown over the fence in retaliation. Kids that age sometimes just don't have any understanding of the consequences of their actions. If their parents don't teach them, well, the rest of us have to pay the price for bad parenting. **sigh**

My kids may know these kids, they go to school together I am sure, they live up the block not very far. These children do not have pets that I have seen. I'd hate for my pets to introduce themselves to those kids on bad terms. All my boxers knew was that there was a war going on, and they were trying to defend themselves. My pets love kids, but MY kids know how to treat them, and even down to youngest when he was a baby and would pull, prod, poke, and yank...my dogs done nothing because I taught them how to treat animals. This was an act of torment, these children knew better. ( I say that because they did apologize)
I do not need this now, especially after what our family just went through with loosing Mo for 11 days. I guess thats why I got so tense and upset over this whole episode. Any other time, I think I could have wrote it off. I feel like I have to be especially careful now, I will not loose my dogs again over someone elses fault. I think those kids should have to spend time shoveling doo doo in doggy jail !!!!

Kids now a days!! I was having the same problem with my Benson when he was in his run during the day while I was at work. I had a note left my door from a neighbour regarding my dog barking so I went to the condo board meeting and questioned this. One of the ladies on the board told me that kids were tring to poke sticks through my fence (to no avail) at Benson and running past him tring to make him bark. I had asked if anything was said to these kids and she said no that nothing was said them so needless to say my boy remained crated in the house and will remain crated until I have added privacy slats to his crate. Even then I will not trust the kids around here...

I sooo agree with you. Your family has been through too much to have to suffer from the likes of these jerks. I was hoping that maybe one of your children might be friendly with one kid to say "hey you know my dogs are very friendly but don't aggravate them, it's not a cool thing to do." You better make sure you have lots of candy on Halloween to treat these little devils...

well the day after that he came back and killed the rottie. He threw a bag of dog food with anit-freeze in it.

What an evil, horrible thing to do. People like that (using the term loosely) should have a special place in the deepest, darkest corner of hell waiting for them.

"hey you know my dogs are very friendly but don't aggravate them, it's not a cool thing to do."

I totally think that a statement of that kind is the best, Barb!!
I have somewhat shady people ask me about Caleb and my other dog cleo, half pit, rather often. If they want to pet them I always say O.K. and that they are friendly, but to approach slowly because if they (especially Cleo) feel threatened, they might not be so friendly. Being a female that lives alone, I do want people to think that my dogs can protect me, but not that they are attack dogs. And hopefully encourage them to leave my babies alone!
As for the dog attackers....Cleo's sister Zoe had a "barking problem" and one day I came home and found her in pretty bad shape. She ended up having 54 stitches and stayed at the vet for 2 months~ she had been cut up with a knife pretty bad. Now she lives with my mom and is spoiled beyond belief.
