I am posting this thread in hopes of saving someone from the heartbreak we have just endured. about four weeks ago we took our 2 1/2 year old Shula to the vet complaining of horrible breath. the vet told us that because of the short snout, that boxers can get bacteria in their jowls and in the back of their throat that can cause this. we were sent home with abx and an additive for his water. two weeks after that, he stopped eating and became almost despondent--and now with breath WAY beyond horrible. back to the vet we went ( 60 miles one way!). this time we hear chronic renal failure for the first time. We were aware of a heart murmur, but his heart seemed to be fine. long story short, our baby spent the better part of the next 2 weeks at the vet with us visiting everyday. this past monday-in tears-our vet told us to take him home. we had tried everything short of dialysis and kidney transplant-which were not an option in our area. Shula made it about three more days before he told us he was ready to go. After a steady stream of friends and family visits we finally put him down. This was possibly the hardest thing my husband or I have ever been through. I hope if you are reading this, if you take anything away it is that if your boxer appears different in ANY way, get him to a vet. Do not settle for an answer that doesnt fix his problem. animals need second opinions just like people do!!

I am sorry to hear about your loss. It's hard to believe you can go from thinking your dog has bacteria to total renal failure, with no options. I can't imagine how helpless you felt. Is bad breath actually a symptom of the renal failure, because if it is, I had no idea. Or was the bad breath just a coincidence?

I am so sorry about your Shula. . . that is terrible news and sounds like it was a shock to you as well. You are absolutely right about continuing to search for answers until we find the help our dogs need. Sounds like you did try everything you could once you knew what was wrong - and how sad that it wasn't enough to help him. Your story will remind a lot of people how important our babies are to us and how important it is to act quickly to help them!

That is so sad, I can't imagine how you are feeling right now. We feel the same way about 2nd opinions...we did this for Leila about 6 months ago with a GI issue and boy did we do the right thing. I will be praying for your heavy heart and know that you did the best you could with the knowledge you had in the situation.
