Lewis was very restless last night starting around 2 AM, he kept fussing with his paws... Well finally at 3:30 I decided he must have to go outside. Well he was breathing a little funny, but I thought he was just tired but when he came back inside he was trying to rub his eyes. I had not turned on a light yet, but decided to take a look... His eyes were almost completely swollen shut and all of the loose skin around his muzzle was pulled tight and swollen.

I woke up my wife and called the emergency vet, we rushed him in and they gave him a shot of steriods and an antihistamine. We were able to pick him back up at 7:30 this morning and he was looking much better and was extremely happy to see us (so were we because we felt terrible leaving him there, but they had other animals coming in that required attention so they asked if we would please leave).

Well they felt it was probably a bee sting or spider bite. The only other option could be some scented tennis balls that I bought him last night for a new toy. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this with an insect bite or possibly a toy.

The great thing about Lewis is that even though he must have been absolutely misserable, he was still wiggling his butt and wagging his tail. The trip to the vet was terrible though because he was whining a little bit and trying to get as close to us as possible like he was trying to say can't you guys help me.... But I just got off from the phone with my wife and he is looking much better and is finally resting a little...

regular vet's opinion

Thank you for your good thoughts and hugs....

I just spoke to my wife again and our regular vet called to see how Lewis was doing and just to let us know that it was most likely a bee sting from their opinion. Appearantly it can take a couple of hours for the symptoms to appear... We are really going to have to pay attention to make sure Lewis stays away from bees....

We are still going to throw away the scented tennis balls just in case... I think I'm going to have to stop and pick up a pack of frosty paws to help cool him down...

a friend's boxer recently went through the same ordeal last week. after taking him to the vet, it was discovered to have been a bee sting, stinger was still embedded in poor guys tongue. the poor guy remained in good spirits and continued to carry on as if nothing was wrong, although his eyes were almost swollen shut.
glad to hear that your dog is feeling better.

We just went through a allergy episode with our 12 wk old Jazper. Not as severe as yours. Sometimes they have no idea what causes the reaction. They had no idea what caused Jazpers. But he is better now after a shot and some Benedryl. Sending good healing vibes. Give him lots of love.

My 6 month old Loki just went through the same ordeal...just got back from the Animal Hospital to see if anyone else had experienced this as well. What a terrible experience...he ragdolled when I picked him up and thought he had passed out... had very laboured breathing along with not being able to see due to the swelling. Does anyone know if there is an Epi pen for dogs??? I am afraid that one of these days I am going to put him in his crate to go to work and not have realized that he has been stung.

I have a bee chaser and eater. As soon as I catch her with one in her mouth it is quite funny (not really) to hear a bee inside her mouth. She gets upset that she has to "Drop it" and she opens her mouth and out flies the bee, hornet, wasp etc....
She is also allergic to honey so this is not a great mixture. We have Benedryl on hand for such emergencies!

Greta Girl

We had a similar experience with Greta when she was just 9 weeks old. At 7am on July 4, she ate or got stung by something. By 7:30 she was covered nose to tail in hives. Her eyes were swelling shut and there seemed to be no loose fur on her at all. My DH drove like a madman to get us to the closest open emergency vet. It should have taken 1 hour to get ther but we got there in about 25 minutes! The diagnoisis was wasp or spider. They gave her shots and she was able to come home with us that day. We were told to keep her on Benadryl for the next few days.

As it turns out, Greta loves to chase and catch honey bees. Sometimes she would walk into the house looking like a professional ball player with a lip full of chew due to the swelling. I learned to have benadryl on hand all the time. We have never had another severe episode. I know it helps to give the benadryl asap. It is scary when it happens but it helps so much to know how to relieve the suffering!

Layla too has had a few episodes of severe swelling due to getting bit by something. It is so scary when it happens and I worry about her soo much. They look so miserable when there eyes swell up....Always keep benedryl on hand and give them a dose right away. (I think its 1mg per pound..Layla is close to 50lbs and gets two pink pills which are 25mgs each) This helps for less severe swelling, but you always have to worry with facial swelling because it could affect their breathing. I've bought some fly repellent for Layla and have started using it when she'll be outside for any amount of time longer than just peeing.
