Hello Everyone,

I felt compelled to write about what we have been going through with our eight month old GiGi in the hope that it might help others out there to diagnose this terrible illness in the early stages.

About two weeks ago, GiGi began sleeping all day and stopped eating. We initally attributed this to the extreme heat and humidity here. She then started crying when we would touch her neck and began having trouble getting up and lying down. We thought perhaps she had fallen off of one of our beds or was rough housing too hard with or five year old daughter. We took her to the vet who recommended x-rays and bloodwork. Her overall health was declining, she was not eating and she would cry so painfully at the slightest touch to her head/neck/shoulder area, so we got the x-rays and bloodwork, but neither showed anything, except for unusual counts in her kidneys. We were so exasperated and beside ourselves at this point because we knew something was terribly wrong with her. The next day, she got up, staggered down the hall - bumping into walls, twisted in two and collapsed. Her heart and breathing stopped, eyes rolled back in her head and tongue turned grey. We rushed her to the hospital while my husband pushed on her chest and breathed into her mouth. She revived within a couple of minutes and by the time we got to the hospital was awake but very cold.

We feel so thankful that the doctor who received her had experienced a case of bacterial meningits years ago and knew immediately that that was what it was after we described all of her symptoms and collapse. He conducted a test of her white and red blood cell count which showed that her levels were extremely off - low white, high red. He immediately put her on a soft tissue antibiotic and told us frankly that we would have to wait and see if she responded. Thankfully, after a few initial rough days, she is showing signs of response and recovery! She is quite emmaciated from days of not eating, but she is now eating and showing some of her old spunk :).

Although apparently not common in animals, the signs of the menigitis were the same as that of a human - we just didn't make the connection and without the separate blood cell test, we wouldn't have known - except for the unusual activity in her kidneys which was caused by the illness and did show in the blood test. Everything else she displayed - extreme pain in head/neck area, loss of appetite, loss of equalibrium and loss of energy are definite signs of bacterial meningitis. I hope this information helps anyone out there to catch this illness at the beginning. The days it took us to figure it out nearly cost GiGi her life.

Blessings and good health!

Thank you for sharing that! Slobbery kisses to your baby! I would never have thought our babies can get it..happy to hear shes doing much better! Keep us posted!

Goodness, how very frightening! So glad to know that GiGi is feeling better. Thinking lots of good thoughts as she continues to regain the weight she's lost and be back to herself.

Huggy Bear too...maybe

My 13 week old puppy Huggy Bear sleeps all day everyday and doesn't like to eat or drink much at all. My wife and I took him to the vet who did some blood tests and said he has very high white blood cells; he didn't say anything about the red blood cells. I picked him up yesterday mornign because he wouldn't get up to go outside when we woke up and he screamed in pain and bit my cheek. We have him on two meds and it seems like he may be doing a bit better, but not much. The vet wasn't sure what was wrong with him and I was wondering if anyone out there may have any ideas for me. This is my second post and I still don't know how to post that I am a new member, can someone help please? Thank you and sorry I'm not quite sure what I am doing just yet.

meds and Intro

Hey Josh,

I am so sorry to hear about your baby. I know how hard it is not to know what's wrong. His symptoms do sound so similar to GiGi's, she was also biting us when we tried to touch or help her up which is very uncharacteristic of her. I don't know what your vet has prescribed, but the antibiotic GiGi is on is called Cipro (Ciprofloxacin generic) which is specifically for soft tissue, where the bacteria from meningitis gets into. She is also on a painkiller called rimadyl which has helped her pain a lot. You might want to call your vet and mention all of this because it has really made a world of difference with Gigi's symptoms.

Regarding the intro: Just go to the main forum page and click on introductions (near the top) and post your intro, just telling everyone who you are and where you're from etc. or whatever you'd like to say :) in a new thread.

I hope all of this helps you, best of luck with your boy and keep us updated!

I am glad that GiGi is doing better. I know that must have been so scared.

Josh, to be safe, I would go to the vet with this info. ASAP.

I know exactly what you are going through - our little man tigger had the same - same symptoms and everything - it took 4 mths before picking it up with a spinal tap - he was under a nerologitis (spelling sorry) and she tried to rule out alot of other illnesses before putting him through the spinal tap - it's now been 4 months since his last turn and he is going wonderfully - summer will be the bring test and his menigitis is brought on by the heat - it is apparently common in medium to large dogs and most out grow it by the age of 2 - heres hoping.

glad your baby is doing better.

Josh i would recommend you to mention menigitis to your vet - not all know our babies can be prone to getting it.

going through something similar

Sorry for your experience, but glad it seems to be resolving. My boy is 8 months old and has 3 episodes of severe neck pain....AWFUL. Xrays' MRI, and blood tests all have appeared normal. It wasn't until this last time that a neurologist vet said he suspects meningitis. Before doing a spinal tap to confirm this, we are trying the antibiotics and hoping it takes care of it. He has had steroid shots each time that seem to help, but we want a cure...not a shot just to mask the true problem. If the antibiotics don't work, then it is probably not bacterial meningitis. It is probably something called steroid responsive meningitis. If it is the latter, than it is a bigger deal. Steroid treatments probably and who knows what else...except of course the fact that he loses his bladder control on steroidal crap. We shall wait and see. Good luck to you! Thanks for sharing.
