My Boxer Duke hurt his toe nail when we were running about a month ago. The toe nail was bleeding but them seemed fine. Now it looks like it is going to fall off. Is this normal for boxers? I am thinking about bringing him to the vet. He is not limping on the leg but I am still concerned about the toe nail. Does anyone know anything about boxer's toe nails and if they will grow back?

It is hard to say without seeing it, but it sounds normal. It would be the same if you hit your fingernail with a hammer. It woud fall off in time.

Just watch it and if it is not bothering him or swollen, it should be fine and grow back.

I am not a vet but my Jake hurt his toenail about a month ago. I think the time to take him to the vet would have been when it was bleeding. Jake's nail was bleeding and had broken down to the bone. He had to have the nail cut all the way back and he was on antibiotics for ten days. The remainder (stub) of the nail fell off at about two weeks and it is just now starting to grow back out. I think if he got past the part where it was open and bleeding, the fear of infection is over. You will still want to keep it clean though. Good luck.

Thank you for your response! Yes we were going to take him to the vet but the bleeding only lasted a couple of minutes after a little girl I babysit stepped on it (OWW). We cleaned it up and soaked it in epson salt (a vet tech told us to do that and to keep it clean). It was fine until now we see it about to fall off and I didn't know if it was normal or not. For some reason I thought it wasn't but I guess boxers are just like us with our nails except their quick can be long, that was the part I was really worried about, lol. I have two birds and an iquanna and any bleeding from their toes can lead them to bleeding to death!
