back problems in boxers

hi everyone,

my family's boxer passed on recently at age 10. she was in overal good health, bar problems with her back which affected her stability. at the end she was lying down most of the time, could not control her bladder - she could barely get up, and her legs would collapse from under her. in short, she could simply not be her crazy, energetic self that she had been for the past 10 years. the problems only got worse and the vet told us there was nothing we could do, so we decided to put her to sleep. that was the most difficult decision - quite a tear was shed before and after.

i have heard that this is a common problem with the boxer breed. is this true? is there anything you can do about it? anything you can do to prevent it from happening?

I am sorry for your loss. It is always so hard to lose one of our babies, but you did the right thing in releiving her of her pain.

Did your vet say just what it was. There are a couple of problems that I wouldn't call common, but are seen, in our breed. I have had one boxer in the last 30 years with spondylosis. I was forced to put him down at 9.5 years. As with you, it was a tough decision, but best for him. I also had a 3/4 brother to him, that lived to 13.

Please know you did the best for her and in getting another boxer, it shouldn't be high on the worry list.

Hi,

I also have a boxer, he is 91/2, and has been diagnosed as having a degerative nerve disorder. It has effected his movement in his rear quarters. The vets, (I have seen 3) all have agreed that there is nothing to do for him. I to have thought of putting him down, but have not been able to do so as 99% of the time he is the same silly dog as ever, only controlling those back feet can be difficult.
Any advise will be accepted and greatly appreciated.
