Hello. Two days ago when Baxie (5yr old male) woke up he had no use of his hind legs. Needless to say he spent all day at the vets having tests. At first they suspected a mass just above the tail on the spine. Then they said it's probably not a tumor (we are sending x-rays to UC Davis to be sure) but found some damage with some his vertabrea in his lower spine and a little arthritis-they are not exactly sure what happened. Anyway, they have him on a high dose of prednisone and cage rest for a minimum of two weeks. The lameness was pain related so now with the medicine he can walk (and wants to run :( ) so he is heartbroken at being stuck in a cage for most of the day (he was never crated). I've got bones and greenies, etc--any other ideas on how to make this more tolerable?? Or this course of action? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!!

I mentioned this to someone with a puppy with a broken leg, but it applies here as well. They make an orthopedic pad that goes in a crate which is much softer than a regular crate pad. This would probable make Baxie's stay in the crate a bit more comfortable. I actually bought one for Colby, who is 11 weeks, and put it in his crate so that he's comfortable in there. He loves his. Just make sure you put in Baxie's toys and I'm sure he'll be better in no time! Colby and Skye send Baxie lots of kisses and wiggles!

Thanks

Thanks--I think the pad is a great idea! Baxie is doing okay-I let him out to cuddle a lot so I think that helps. He also has gotten a load of new bones, toys, etc. The prednisone makes him drink gallons so he has to be taken outside a lot!! Needless to say no one is sleeping very well but it will all be worth it if this works!!

Sorry to hear about Baxie's injury. I'm sure with lots of rest and tender loving care he will be fine. I know from experience about keeping them indoors for awhile as Ali recently had surgery on her paw and wasn't allowed to go on walks or run about the house for almost 3 weeks. It wasn't easy but we managed. It was worth the wait. Hope Baxie has a speedy recovery and is up and about in no time.

Thank you for all the good thoughts!! Baxie seems to be doing a lot better. He goes in to the vet next week for a check up so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!

I must say that those orthepedic pads are wonderful, (I am the one with the broken legged puppy) it is making her stay in her crate more enjoyable, and just rotate on the different chewies so that he will stay interested, the orthepedic pad will also help with not getting 'bed sores' from having to remain in one place for awhile. Hope the check up goes well and he comes out with flying colours.
