I just got a coupon for Avoderm Naturals dog food from Petco. I pulled up this page about it from petfooddirect .

Avocado is listed in the Toxic To Dogs sticky in the health forum. This food said it contains avocado for skin and coat health. Is it only certain parts of the avocado that are toxic like the skin or the seed, or is the fruit itself not good for dogs? I know avocado contains good healthy fats for humans, but now I'm a bit confused about dogs. I wouldn't ever buy the food myself because I don't think it's a very good food, but I'm just curious...

At first, I couldn't find the food on dogfoodanalysis apparently because it is reviewed under the name Breeder's Choice Avoderm Naturals. A couple of their formulas are 3 star foods, and the rest are 2. It says in the review that the foods contain avocado which is toxic to dogs, but it is unknown at what levels it is toxic. So apparently, it is the fruit itself that is toxic, as well as the extracts/juices. Knowing this, why would anyone purposefully feed their dog a food that contains ingredients which could poison them?? The sticky says "Avocado toxin is Persin which causes gastrointestinal irritation, vomitting and diarrhea. Can be fatal, but the toxic dose is unknown".
Does anyone have any experience with this particular food?? I'm planning to write to the company and ask why they not only include a toxic ingredient, but in fact market and advertise the food by that name.

Avoderm Oven Baked Lamb & Brown Rice

I have been feeding my boxer this food for about 5 months now. He loves this food. It is the only food that does not give him diarrhea. It has to be the oven baked I made the mistake and got him the regular Avoderm and he got diarrhea.

I tried this food for my 5 month old pup. He was on it for almost a month. Avoderm never gave him any trouble, however after reading that avocados are toxic for doggies, I didn't want to risk his health. After doing some research and learning some about what's good for them, I changed his food gradually to Solid Gold. I found that the Avoderm ingredients are not the best. In my opinion, you can find better kibble without the concerns and risk.
