I'm getting my new baby this afternoon, and need some help and advice from you new (or old) boxer owners. I plan on crate training my puppy, but have some questions about what to do at night. I've heard that they can only hold it for 2 hours or so because they have no bladder control yet. Do I need to get up every 2 hours in the night to let him outside (it's 5 degrees here at night! BRRR!)? Or can I let him go on paper at night, and take him outside during the day? I don't want to confuse the poor little fella! And should I go to him every time he crys at night because he may need to go? (I don't want to spoil him either!). Any helpful hints on what's been working for you would be greatly appreciated!

I'm a new boxer mom as well. I've had Diesel since he was 7 weeks old (he is now 11 weeks old). During the night I would wake up about every 3 hours to let him out of his crate (I would hear him crying) and take him outside to 'do his business'. I would go out with him until he was finished. When I take him I would constantly tell him to 'go potty'. The coldest it has been for me has probably been between 25 to 30 degrees in the very early morning (and that hasn't been often). I wish you well with your new furbaby.

I'm a new boxer owner as well (well kinda) I owned a boxer a few years back but i went to college and she took up with my mom and she was fairly easy to train but my new furbaby has been trying at times I'm now in the process of trying to get him bell trained and it's been kinda hard. I can't do the peanut butter thing because my little girl (human) likes peanut butter too and she tries to get at it more than the dog so does anyone have any suggestions for me?

What I did with Katie was to sit on the floor with her and a hand full of tasty treats. I would pick up her paw and ring the bell and give her a treat and praise her. It didn't take long till she figured out that by ringing the bell she would get a treat and praise. When she started ring the bell on her own we would praise her and let her out.

This took about a week and she has been bell trained since. We will not let her out unless she rings the bell.

Hope this helps.

Joe
