I was at the dog park with my two Boxers last night having a good old time. My nieghbor had her little beagle pup there as well. This pitbull was basically terroizing the beagle and wouldnt let the pup even stand up. He would just knock her back on the ground. The owner of the pitbull was just standing there watching this. I see my neighbor heading over there to get her beagle then I see my two dogs heading to the same area. My smaller boxer is two years old and weighs about 45lbs. She sees the pitbull knock the beagle down and she boxes the pitbull in the head. Well all heck broke loose and the pitbull is attacking my dog. I am trying to break it up and the owner of this pitbull just stands there. The pitbull jumps on my smaller boxer Sophia so my older Boxer (Izzy - 3 yrs ld) grabs the Pitbull. I finally grab my older dog and my wife grabs the other one and this idiot with the pitbull just stands there. My wife has to tell him to get his dog - so he throws a ball to get the dog to chase it. My pup ends up with a small puncture on her neck and I think the pitbull was bleeding. I was very pissed but also glad that one they stood up for their beagle friend and the other that my older one protected her sister. We have been going to that park for a long time and never had a problem until last night. We called the vet just to check if we should do anything due to Sophia bleeding a bit. She said she doesnt believe anyone takes their dog to that park and it is a terrible idea. Now I dont know if we should go back or not. Supposedly some dog got kennel cough when at the park. Sorry this is a bit long but had to vent

Wow

That's horrible, I'd be pissed to....Isn't there anyone you can report the incident to? It just goes to show that some dog owners ( the pit bull owner ) is not very responsible. Glad to hear Sophia and Izzy are OK.

If I go back and I see this dog being aggressive in anyway I will definitely report it. My wife and I and our neighbor were just so worked up that we just grabbed our dogs and got out of there so we could check them out. If that pitbull would ever try to attack my dog he will be thrown over the fence then the owner would soon follow

There is a very aggressive pit bull that goes to our park also. As soon as it comes everyone else has to take their dogs and leave for fear of being attacked. The owner is a complete idiot and enjoys that fact that his dog is so mean. He is always having the dog pull weighted sleds, and the dog wears a collar that must weight ten pounds..its basically a bunch of chains with a padlock on it. It's sad because I know so many pit bulls that are so nice...a few idiots have to ruin the reputation of all of them.... I am glad to hear your dogs were okay. I am sure that beagle would have been in big trouble had your babies not stood up for it!

Pit Bulls and other dogs

I totally agree with the views of the previous posters. Here in Portugal the police is facing an increasing problem with pitbulls when trying to arrest drug dealers and other heavy criminals. These carachters are using the dogs to protect their actions and themselves.

However, even if very short, my personal experience with pitbulls is not a bad one. There is a friend of mine who has one and that is a very nice and decent dog. He fully obeys to my friend's commands and is just like any other dog.

The other one is a pitbull whom I knew recently in a desert beach where I go with my Duffy. The first time I saw him he was runing without leash. The owner spotted us at distance and went to the dog, keeping him on leash until we were near. We shared some cheap talk, his dog and my Duffy played a little and we then allowed them to play freely, without leash.

Both these pits seem reasonable dogs to me. I tend to believe that the question about pit bulls is, once more, a question of owner's attitude rather than the dog itself.

"a few bad apples"

It’s sad that some people can be so, cruel. How can you just stand there and do nothing.
I understand what your vet was saying but it’s sad that it has to be like that.
A few bad apples rein the barrel.

And I agree with one of the other post, that there are a lot of great pits out there, but some people can be very irresponsible. If your going to have a dog like that you have to know how to handle it, if you can’t don’t have one,
Sorry I’m very opinionated.

Good luck to you, and if there is a next time I’d take your girls to the vet, and send the pits owner the bill.

I quit taking Scrapper to the dog park after he got attacked for the third time and I got bitten trying to break it up. That was it. Now he and Holly can play together and he gets to meet other dogs at the obedience class. Also, you DO have to worry about germs from all the other dogs.

I know when this exact thing happened to me last month, (pit attacked my dog at the park) we HAD to report it to animal control. They had to file the dog as potentially dangerous.

Curious...my vet insisted that we put our dog on antibiotics so the bite wouldnt get infected. Just wondering if you had to do the same.

Similar issue ;-(

I have had the same experience, here in Athens Greece as well. A pitbull attacked my boxer with no reason whatsoever. I managed to grab him just in time and leave (with only a tiny scratch in his side) and the owner just stood there enjoying the behavior of his dog. Some people are just so irresponsible and foolish.
