...introduce new commands?

We don't have down or stand mastered yet. We are still working on housebreaking and leash training w/o pulling. The dog is doing great, but only has sit mastered so far. I don't want to overwhelm her with new commands, but really need to get come, stay, and leave it introduced, too.

How much mastery do we look for before introducing a new command?

Dogs are capable of learning more that one thing at once. I don't think that mastery of one task is required before you start teaching something else.

Sam is a 2 yo rescue ( we have had him since dec. ) he has learned lots of new tasks ~ we add 1 new one a week , or so . keeps things lively and we can mix things up a bit !

works for us ~~

Agreed with Jan. I still do it now to some extent (not so much because I don't have as much that I need to teach), but when I first got Juno especially, for a while she was just being bombarded with new things. Touch, sit, down, stay, come, wait, leave it... all were introduced pretty quickly. And I know that for Juno, this is what makes training most successful. She gets bored very easily so I have to give her a variety of things to do to keep her interested.

Brutus would also get bored if I just did one command with him over and over. So I would do a couple at a time such as sit, stay and come. Then because you are suppose to keep the training sessions short, the next session I would practice other commands and change it up.
