At what age can you neuter?

My dog Buddy is now 10 weeks old. How old do Boxers need to be to safely be neutered? My Vet said about 4 months and he charges $200. There is a place in town called CSNIPS or something like that, that only charges $50 and said that the puppy can have it done once the puppy reaches 2 lbs. That seems awfully little to me. Buddy is 17 lbs so he is well over the minimum weight for the procedure. BTW it looks like both "beans" have dropped into the bag already.

All of mine were done around 6 months of age. Thats what the vet told us and ive read that several places. I would stay far away from that csnips place.

It's been over 5 years that I have had to think about that. I have heard that they both spay and neuter before six months. When SuzyQ was a pup, our vet recommended not before 6 months. Unless you are getting a deal from a reputable vet who offers bargains in conjunction with humane society or other animal group I would be very leery of the 50.00 bargain. It is major surgery, requiring sedation and so many things can go wrong. In particular will they be using anesthetics that are boxer safe? Do they even know there are drugs that shouldn't be used on boxers. I would not take my girl there for surgery.

I agree with Harlies mom, stay away from the CSNIPS, somehting doesn't sound right there to me.
I got Caine "snipped" at 7 1/2 months old. I waited just barely a little longer than the 6 month mark, i wanted to get some testosterone in him so he would look more "manly" i guess you could say. I wanted him to be big like a male should and not look like a female.

I would not recommend any sooner than 6 months, but that is my personal opinion. From my understanding, if you don't get it done you increase the risk of testicular cancer in males and agression. I have encountered a few unaltered males at the dog park and they tend to have more agression towards my Caine. and one Major thing is that you don't risk the chance of having any "accidental"puppies.

Good luck with your decision.

I recommend my puppy buyers to wait until at 9-15 months for the boys and 6-9 months for the girls.

If you neuter the boys too early, they get tall and leggy and never really develop the "male" look. I like to let both sexes mature a little, before those hormones are removed.

We got Hurricane fixed at 6 months, and I think that is what most vets recommend. I have heard the opinion of waiting until later so that males develop more fully (I have yet to see any scientific proof, but am willing to admit that this may be a valid concern), but frankly since we weren't showing Hurricane and he is extremely small for a male anyway, we figured might as well just get it done and over with before testosterone starts causing behaviors we will then have to train out.

I would be very suspicious of this CSNIPS place... $50 is awfully cheap for a neuter and unless they are connected to the humane society chances are they are taking shortcuts they shouldn't for major surgery. I know $200 seems like a lot but better you pay that and have a safe procedure than $50 and have something go horribly wrong, you know? I think we paid $150 for Hurricane, and that included an overnight stay (some vets keep them overnight, some don't). It depends on where in the country you live, but $200 seems a reasonable fee for a neuter.

If you find a spay and neuter clinic where that's all they do it can very well be much lower. The place I used was $75 for dogs 40-70 pounds and they do FANTASTIC work, very nice, but they do spays and neuters all day everyday, they're mobile, but that's what their purpose is so costs are lower. I know it can be done at a very young age as our animal control will do it on puppies that are 2 months of age, but if you're not dealing with the shelter and it's just your own personal pup you got from a breeder then vets usually recommend 4-6 months of age. My vet had said 4 months, I waited until 6 and then had it done at the spay and neuter clinic. My boy had an undescended testicle so his neuter was $100 which was a far from from the around $300 my vet was going to charge and they did a beautiful job. I would investigate the $50 place a little bit more, but if they are cheap because that's all they do there's nothing wrong with that, just make sure to check them out, ask questions, meet the staff, etc before making that decision.

Best of luck!
