Hey all. Been many moons since I have been here. My baby is turning 5 next month and we have had some health issues with him since right before Thanksgiving. I just don't know what to think of all of it. I'm hoping that maybe if I write down his symptoms, you all might recognize something and help me figure out what to do for him.

Day before Thanksgiving:
Orion wakes me up about 3:00 a.m. and it looks like he has to go outside to go potty. I take him out, he pees and comes back in. I can tell he's uncomfortable though. So I sit with him on the floor and pet him. He's gets up again and we do the whole outside, pee and back inside thing for about 45 minutes. Now, he's starting to get uncomfortable, whining, pacing and not wanting to lay down. His stomach is really growling and making lots of noise. You can hear him from another room!

I finally decide to take him into the emergency vet at 4:30 a.m. I get there and they think he has BLOAT. I'm sobbing at this point. They did an xray and even though he's distended (sp?), his stomach didn't twist yet. They put a tube down his throat to relieve the gas and foam on his stomach. They said us home saying "just keep an eye on him." which I knew was wrong!

I have my mom come over to watch him while I go to work. She calls me an hour later and says he's in pain. I drive home and get him to our reg vet. They were pissed that they even sent him home. I rush him there Wednesday around lunch time. They do another xray and they don't see his stomach distended like before (I had the other set of xrays with me). He was in pain though. They hook him up on an iv, get him some pain meds and take a bunch of bloodwork from him. Now we wait. Oh, they did think they saw a little "mass" in his bowels too but they were going to take another xray later that evening to see if it moves. Very long story short now.....we get the call on Thursday evening to come and pick him up. Bloodwork came back fine, he wasn't in pain anymore, the mass (blockage) seemed to be moving and he had a BM and was eating.

So, we bring him home, he was on pepcid twice a day plus some other meds for 10 days and is now off all meds. We are to feed him twice a day too. Since then, he's been doing really good. Once in a while, he will get the gargling stomach thing but if I can get him to eat then he's usually ok.

Now, the past week, Orion has been having "accidents" daily where he can't hold his pee. He's always had a "small bladder" we joked because when he had to go, you better let him out! He hates to have accidents and you can see that he gets upset with himself. Nothing has changed with his diet, etc. Absolultely no table food unless it's a little peanut butter to take meds. My husband and I talked about taking him in soon so we can just rule out things or is it just old age. This morning, at 5 a.m., he has another accident and I let him out and clean it up. He comes back in and his stomach is just growling again! You can tell he's uncomfortable but he's not panting. So I send my husband out to get some Pepcid since we were out. I gave him some that settled his stomach. He finally ate a little and rested a little. My mom came over again to spend the day with him while I'm here at work.

My husband is taking him in today at 4:30 p.m. What do you think we could be dealing with? Is it a bladder thing, stomach thing or something more serious? I'm worried that he's in pain, so he pants, gets bloated and starts the cycle over. If so, what's the pain from? Ugh!!! I'm stressing over this!

So, any insight for me? Any ideas of what I can ask the doctor, etc?

Thanks for all the help you all. I do come here and visit all the time, Just don't have time to post. This place has been a god-send to me!!!

Thanks!
Vickie

Ok, he's home!! Because of all the symptoms, the vet thinks it could be Cushings disease but took some blood to start the testing process for that.

I checked out Cushings symptoms and he has 99% of them and has for years though. I always thought it was the quirkiness of Orion.

Nothing confirmed so I'm not going to try to read too much into it.

Also stated that he had high PH in his urine. Not too sure what to take from that. I have to talk to DH again to see if the doctor is concerned with that.

No insight just good thoughts and prayers for your pup. Please let us know how he does

Thank you so much! Ever since Thanksgiving....I worry so much about him. It's hard to believe he's almost 5 and I want to make sure I have many more years with him!!

I've done some research tonight and it looks like if this is the diagnosis, then it can be treated to a certain level. One type of it is also cancer and we all know how that is with boxers. :-( I think I'm going to stop researching high PH levels and Cushings for right now and hopefully the test results come back soon. This vet is GREAT! It's the one we went to at Thanksgiving with Orion. He remembers him too. Of course, Orion leaves a pretty impressive impression on people where ever he goes :)

Thanks again. I truly appreciate the prayers and good thoughts.

Never had to deal w/ Cushings but just wanted to say hang in there...i'm sure they will sort it out and Orion will be fine. Sending lots of healing vibes and hope that Orion starts to feel better soon :) Please keep up updated!

I have a 9 yr old male boxer that was diagnosed with Cushing's this December. The cancer type of cushing's is extremely rare, our boxer did not have that type of Cushing's. We did Lysodren loading just before Christmas and now he is on lysodren maintainence. Here is an excellent website dedicated to those who have dogs with Cushing's;

I had never heard of this disease prior to Dexter having it. The lysodren loading is pretty scary and you really have to watch him during this time. It can take up to 10 days, but not usually, Dexter took 5 days. We were actually given the lysodren on Tuesday to start his loading phase, but we waited until Friday so days 4,5,6,7 the vet would be in. I actually watched him through binoculars when I would let him out to go potty. You will see on the cushing's wesite diarreha is a sign of being lysodren loaded. It is totally worth it though, he is doing great now, like a pup again. I'm so glad it can be controlled with meds. Good luck to you and Orion. Please let us know what you find out. Post back if you have any questions, or post on the above site - lots of really cushing's experts there.

Thank you everyone!! I'm just sitting here by the phone waiting for the call now. He's doing pretty good today. No grumbly belly, eating better but still peeing every 10 minutes or so.

I called the vet this morning and they said their test results come in at 1 p.m. and the doctor would call ME (meaning, lady stop calling) after he had a chance to read them....ugh! I'm not patient!!
