Just wanted to know if anyone else here has ever had a problem with their babies having trouble getting up, laying down etc. I believe that what he has is arthritis, i have gone to the vet and she prescribed him meds for arthritis but never instructed me that is what they were for until i googled it and found out. He hasnt had any symptoms since last winter and it just started the other day. He is only 2 yrs old i just dont get how he can have arthritis already....If anyone has any suggestions or comments to help us out I would really apreciate it.

thanks everyone

Yep, my girl's arthritis really affects her getting up from a laying position. Once I started her on 50mg of Tamadol in the AM and 25mg in the PM she did MUCH better. She's now 6 1/2 almost 7, but her arthritis started around 3 years old possibly younger as she has a degenerative knee problem that is causing early arthritis. For a couple of years I treated solely with supplements, a Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM combo pill, high doses of fish oil (natural anti-inflammatory), Vitamin E (also a natural anti-inflammatory) and that worked GREAT for a couple of years, but it eventually became obvious she needed more help than they could provide so I put her on a low dose of Tramadol daily. She's done very well we're not distroying any organs, and she's old enough now that I feel okay using an RX.

I would HIGHLY urge you to try natural supplements instead of RX meds if you can get by with those for a few years or use the RX meds sparingly as they will build up a tolerance not to mention many of the RX meds are hard on organs if they are going to be used for many years to come, so I would try and go the natural route first if you can. Maybe contact a homeopathic vet in your area given your dog's age.

Good luck!

Oh PS LoL I would also get x-rays to definitively determine if it's arthritis and not something else. 2 years old is pretty young for arthritis although not unheard of but I would suggest an x-ray before going the medication route just to make sure that's truly the problem.

My girl has arthritis so bad in her foot she can barely walk sometimes. The natural remedies I tried did absolutely nothing. I tried Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM and it didn't seem to help at all, also fish oil which did nothing. We use Previcox prescribed by our vet. It is expensive but it really helps her out. She is also worse in the fall and winter. I hope you find something that works for him. :)

Just curious, your doses may not have been high enough on the natural stuff. My girl gets around 3,000mg of Glucosamine, over 2,000 of Chondroitin, and over 1,000 of MSM, fish oil she takes between 6,000 and 7,000 mg of fish oil a day which has 1,800 to 2,100 Omega 3's in all of those. For therapudic levels you need high levels of most of the stuff unfortunately. Just curious if maybe your doses weren't high enough.

I gave triple doses, which equal about that amount. I personally take those myself for my arthritis, and I really don't know if it helps me much either, but I do it anyway and I have for years. I think for some it may work, for others not so much.

BxrMommieNAZ & kayboxer, were you able to find 1 pill with all 3 (Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM), or do you give 3 separate pills?? Right now, I'm giving Cosequin DS, but it doesn't seem to be helping. Any brands you recommend?

Yes, I have a combo pill, I get mine from puritansale online it's called Joint Soother, it's a human version and I've had good luck with it.

i have done some research since i posted this thread and i went onto the website of the medicine that the vet had originally prescribed and it gives a list of things to see if ur dog has arthritis and diesel has some but not all of the signs....could it be possible that its not arthritis, but i dont know what else it could be we have gone to the vet on 3 different occasions with this issue and the last time we went is when they gave us this medicine. Do your dogs usually prefer to lay down when they are in pain because all diesel has been doing is pacing through the house unless i lay with him then he is comforted but other than that he just goes back and forth through the whole house... i am torn what to do because i want to take him to the vet because i want him to be better but i dont want to go there and they say nothing is wrong with him.

You can buy one pill with all three ingredients. I also use human grade and I buy mine usually at Walgreens because they run specials more frequently in my area. You can also buy it in liquid, which I have also used.

Dieselicious, have you had any x-rays or other tests done? What have your vets done to rule out other issues?
