ARGH! frustrated!

so i feel as though i'm surrounded by irresponsible people. :( i live in a house with my BF and 3 other people, and 2 other dogs. one of which is a boxer (which is fun, but he's not neutered yet), and a freakin annoying little, untrained "maltese", who is also un-altered. (i put it in quotations be cause he looks so weird, not that im an expert on malteses, but i have a general understanding of how they should look)

Issue #1: so Moose, the boxer was purchased from a byb, and looks nothing like breed standard, a lot of people think he's a boxer dane mix, which is totally possible since he looks it. anywho, the point is that he and my Nikki play a lot together, and nikki is almost 6mos, and i'm very paranoid about her getting her first heat. I would get her fixed if we weren't hoping to finish her, and make her our foundation bitch for our future kennel. i don't want to risk any chances of her getting impregnated by Moose or the Maltese. especially since she is still so young... i don't want to have to get her spayed and risk a promising show career because of something like that. i would hate for moose to not play with nikki for an entire month, but if he doesn't get neutered soon, there will be less and less playing. the good thing is that im pretty sure that Moose's owner is going to get him fixed soon... its just hard to wait i guess. so this isn't such a big issue, but i guess im just super paranoid, especially since Nikki is the first female dog we've ever owned.

Issue #2: the ugly maltese that also lives with us is SOOOOOOOO Untrained. its freakin ridiculous. he pees, and poops all over the house, in other peoples rooms, and he steals toys from other peoples rooms. the thing that esp. irks us (bf and I) is that the owner knows his dog isn't trained, yet still lets him run around the house. we find pee spots and tiny poos randomly all over the house. its disgusting. AND, what makes me most mad is that, when i asked if they were going to fix him soon, he said no, his friends wants puppies, so he thinks id be a great idea to have his dog father the pups.. u know, cuz HE would make a quick buck, and his friends would have puppies... UGH!!!! i was biting my tongue so hard to not burst out screaming, your dog is soooooooo ugly, and you should NEVER breed anything EVER, you can't even take care of your current dog... you know nothing of its breed standard... and he doesn't even have a good personality! evilicon ARGHHH! i guess i can't expect much though since they did purchase the thing from a guy selling his puppies from the back of his truck. he didn't even allow them to go over to his house, he had them meet him in the parking area of a supermarket. (does it get any shadier than that?)

Issue #3: my roommates always joke about their dogs humping Nikki and having pups with her. i know they think its all in good fun, but i personally HATE it. aRGH.. i always tell them, if i ever catch any of their dogs even trying to mount her, i have no problem kicking their dogs to the other side of the room. harsh, i know, but seriously, its not a joking matter. i guess its just frustrating because no one understands the seriousness of breeding and having pups. gradicon they don't understand the dangers of a female getting pregnant at a young age, and they don't understand the necessity of neutering their dogs.

i can't wait until we purchase our own home.. hopefully within the year. then i don't have to deal with outside people and their outside factors that affect my life. i was soooo frustrated tonite, BF had to calm me down. there are just soooo many irresponsible people out there that should never ever ever in their life times own a dog.. i feel like such a bitch for getting mad at people, esp. my friends, about something that they obviously do not think is such a big deal. oh well... sorry for such a long post. thanks for listening.

That is frustrating, I'm sorry. I hear you on the maltese thing... my most recent roommate had a little maltese that barked this high pitched "yipe.. yipe!!!" whenever it would hear ANY noise... at any time. And she would pee and poop all over the place too! Dumb little thing... it wasn't her fault she was so dumb... she just was. My roommate never even trained her, just let her pee inside so she never knew it was wrong, and she's too old to train now... good thing I moved!! She was setting a bad example for Louie.
Good luck to you, hope everything works out.

I know this probably isn't what you're looking for, but my opinion is you're playing with a loaded gun. Having an unaltered female with two unaltered males is a time bomb waiting to go off. I understand that you're living situation might not be easily fixed right now, but my advice is to spay your female. You've got a long time to keep her away from the males before she can be properly tested and bred. I'd say the odds are against you, especially if you're the only one who seems to be really monitoring the situation.

Good luck with everything. I hope it all works out.

Boxer Insane
As for people like Moose's owner who leave their "registered" boxer or whatever intact because they "might" breed, etc I would rather bang my head on a wall all day than know them but.... you don't have that luxury... (; Hee hee.
It's a good example of human pride when you meet someone who things their byb/pet shop/newspaper/"registered" dog is worthy of breeding just because they think so or a piece of paper says it's registered (which is a complete hoot to me). These people are so ignorant and many get quite an attitude. It's sad that they are filling the nation's shelters with their poorly bred and basically mixed dogs. Almost everyone who has ever mentioned that their dog is "registered" has a boxer who is suspiciously mix looking to me. That shouldn't be the trump card for breeding! Argh, I feel your pain.

What if you obtained a free/reduced neuter certificate for them through a humane society or spay/neuter program? Maybe that would rush things along?

Doing rescue, I see this garbage way too much. If they truly cared, they'd be open to finding out the ramifications of what they'd be doing, but it seems like they don't.

Let us hear if your roommates have an enlightened moment and make the big neuter decision.

hmm

adeinert-
i didn't realize they had free/ reduced neuter certificates.. that may just be the key to speed things up. i will definately look into that. I'm 99.9% sure Moose's owner, is planning to neuter him, shes just lagging. i think i've talked enough with her so that she knows he is DEF. not breeding material, and the importance of breed standards and health testing. so shes my lesser problem. but i definately think if i put some initiative towards his neuter, it will send her a big sign. thanks for the advice!

Chula's Moms-
youre right.. not what i wanted to hear! but like i said, we're going to show Nikki and spaying her is not an option right now. (believe you me, i would rather not have to deal with a bitch on her rag!) Plus Moose and the maltese live on the "east wing" of our house, while we live on the west. if it comes down to it, there COULD be no interaction between my dogs and outsiders. like i said, its just Moose who i am worried about since my Nikki loves to play with him, though the Moose problem should be solved very soon. the Maltese almost never interacts with my dogs, so im not too worried about him. my issue with the very naughty maltese is i guess more the roommate than the dog, just like Jaime&Louie said. its the roommate who didn't train the dog. and it is he who wants to breed the ugly thing. but definately thanks for your input and concern. i think it was just a long frustrating night, and every little thing just seemed to be 100xs more annoying. thanks again for listening.

If your dead set on showing her...I would offer to pay for or at least half of Moose's neuter to help speed it up....a neuter doesn't cost that much...& no it's not your resposibility but.....it can save you a lot of trouble & keep unwanted litter of pups from being born.

As far as the Maltese goes.....I think I would ask him to leave.....or at least start litter training the dang thing.....is it possible to gate the dog out of you part of the house ?

Why the Edit??

Because I don't agree I get edited.

I said that I think you reasoning is out of wack. Everyone has the right to either fix or not fix thier pet. I personally think they should get'um fixed but that's just my opinion. why edit it. I didn't cuss or attack you personally I just stated I didn't agree but in more detail. Wow, really can't belive I was edited.

Kat~
I'm sorry your having to go through this! I can totaly imagine how frustrating it is! When my hubby and I first lived togehter we shared a townhome/apt with a bunch of guys and their girlfriends. One of the guys had a cat that he wouldnt get spayed b/c he didnt want to pay for it... the poor thing had litter after litter of kittens... many of which died in their first months. I was so sad. My husband had a cat as well, but as soon as she was old enough we got her spayed.

As far as your roomies not neutering their pets.. I understand with the other boxer that its just a timing issue... in that its not getting done fast enough, but with the small dog, that person shouldnt even have a dog if they arent going to care for it.

I have to dissagree with An-D on "Everyone has the right to either fix or not fix thier pet". It is a persons responsibility to spay/neuter their pet. It should just be a given... unless you have a dog your planning to show in conformation, as does Kat, then you should spay/neuter. I have a right to pay or not pay my house payment... however, if I dont, then I'm without a house... no? I think the whole "you have a right to..." is an unacceptable excuse for irresponsible pet owners. (Note that I am not saying An-D is irresponsible as I quoted their post, just saying that people who use this excuse are, and An-D stated that they are for spay/neuter) The Key word here being pet which does not mean "animal I plan to show/breed".
I dont want to turn this into a whole to spay or not to spay talk smashicon , so Kat I hope your roomies wake up and smell the coffee and do what needs to be done, pronto. I know how hard you've worked and are working to get into showing with Nikki and it'd be such a letdown to have someones ignorance come between you and your dreams of "finishing" in the ring!

Melissa

P.S. Good Luck!
