Are there two different types of Boxer faces?

We have two boxers--Murphy who we got from a breeder as a puppy and Layla, who we adopted from a Boxer rescue group in Oct. 2009. Murphy has the typical smushed face and turned up snout with underbite--what I consider the "classic" boxer look. Layla's face looks very different. Her snout is much longer and her face is not smushed at all. She has a very slight underbite. Although the rescue group (which seemed very thorough and on top of things) said she was pure boxer, I realize you can never be 100% sure of what you get when you rescue. All she came with was a paper from an old vet with dates of shots on it and the breed type listed was Boxer. Our vet has never said anything about her looking like anything else. However, I have been asked a few times if she has any pitbull in her. This scares me to think that she might. Are there other Boxers with longer faces out there??? If I could figure out how to post pictures, I would so you could see what I'm talking about:( Thanks

I know what you mean, our Charlie has a longer nose too with our Dino having the more classic boxer 'squashed' nose look. It does not necessarily mean that a boxer with a longer nose is not all boxer, I believe that the squashed nose is one of the first things to go with less controlled breeding so to speak.

There are some photos of Dino & of Charlie in my gallery.

Why would it scare you if your rescue had pit in her? Don't believe all the hype. ;)
And just because your rescue has a longer snout doesn't mean she's not all boxer either, it could be that your boxer was just poorly bred. Since the boxer is a man made breed, it takes careful selection when choosing a breeding pair to produce dogs that keep with the standard - this is something reputable breeders strive for. More than likely your rescue is a product of a byb who just wanted to produce puppies rather than improving the breed.

I don't know very much about the different faces, I think my dog's snout is longer then the AKC standard but she is a full boxer. I wanted to ease your mind about the possibility of having pit in your dog. My boyfriend has a pit bull/bullmastiff mix, and his dog is honestly one of the best dogs I have ever met in my life. I worry more about my boxer around people then I ever do his dog.

Paper work

The paper work from the vet means nothing. The old owner could have said boxer and so the vet writes that on the paper work. I have seen some boxers form BYB that do not look like boxers at all. You pup may be part pit or all boxer or who knows..

pit bulls

if ur baby IS mixxed with pit ... look on the bright side.

pits have MANY MANY generations of good breeding ( before the hype ) and have had most of the bad things breed out of them ( diseases ) they ALSO are incredible ...

FAMILY DOGS
LOYAL
CHILD LOVERS
EASILY TRAINED
HOME PROTECTORS
SMART

we have had several full pits - and my family still owns others - they are just as gentle if not more with my grandson ( 1 mo ) then my boxer , (who thinks Lukas belongs to him ) we also raised both our daughters with a pit in the home - no problems ... ( BUT my moms cocker spaniel would bite my daughter any chance it got ) it is MOSTLY how u raise them - and a BIT of genetics !

so be glad IF ur baby is mixed with something - u have lowered ur chances of cancer and many other bad things , by just a bit !!

Thanks

Thank you all for your replies! You're right, it wouldn't make a difference if I ever found out there was anything else in her. We are working hard with a trainer and training them the right way so no matter what kind of dogs they are, they are well behaved ones:) I posted some pics (finally figured it out). Check out my album and my beautiful babies. Murphy is brindle and Layla is fawn, but the pictures show the difference in their faces. Hopefully, the pictures are up and not still waiting for approval.

Yep, Zan definitely has the longer snout - which his vet thinks is great, fewer smushed face problems! Still has the fantastic boxer face wrinkles!

Completely Boxer Crazy
Rocky has a long snout and we rescued him and were told he was a purebred boxer. Everyone kept thinking he was a pit and questioning his "boxer" label that we had placed on him. I paid 100+ dollars but had the DNA testing done and we found out he has St. Bernard mixed with his boxer. He's 75% boxer, 25% St. Bernard.

If you really want to know there is testing you can do through your vet. Ask around, keep us updated!
