Are people afraid of your boxer(s)??

Everyone is afraid of Quincy and assumes he is a pitbull because "boxers are that brown colour". I find it amusing as he is terribly thin (between 45 & 60 lbs depending on his health) and small featured. I'm going to have to borrow my Mom's 85 pounder and see the reactions!

Iv'e just gotta tell you. We have been in our new apartment a little over two weeks now. Our complex is 95 percent hispanic. (just stating fact, not being racist). They are absolutely terrified of Gidget. I used to take her out the back out the patio to try to keep her away from everyone, but almost like clockwork someone would come out of the building at the same time and when they saw her they started screaming! I hear mothers yelling at kids to "stay away from the pit bull". GRRRRR There is one neighbor who lives above us who is bilingual. I have asked her to explain to them that she is not a pit bull, if you scream it excites her more and makes her bark, and she is NOT going to hurt anyone.
Gradually, over the past few weeks, most of the kids have come to realize that she is lovable and just wants to play with them. There are still a couple that still scream when they see her but I atribute that to parents that are still terriffied. I have made a consious effort to socialize her with as many people in the complex as I can so hopefully they will come around. There will always be a few who will never like her and we will deal with that.

I get mixed reactions from Tank, he's only about 4 and 1/2 months old, and some people grab their kids and cross the street when i go for walks, but some people eww and ahhh and come over and pet him , which of course he loves and gives them kisses. His ears just got cropped some maybe that makes him look more intimidating. But anyone who knows and loves boxers are never afraid. When we first got Tank at 9 weeks, our mailman was freaking out saying "oh great i hate boxers" but we made sure he got to know Tank, and now that he comes everyday and is greeted with kidney bean dance and kisses, he really likes Tank now and has a new attitude toward boxers.

From the time Prince was 9 months old, he put on a good show for the mailperson, UPS man, and anybody approaching or passing within ear/eye-shot of his kingdom. I used to doubt he would bite. He's 2 yrs old now, and believe me its not just a show anymore! He is very defensive, he spreads his front legs,lowers his head and shows his teeth. When unfamiliar family visits we crate him until the over-zealous hugs and kisses are over, and then we introduce him to them. My uncle walked up on my daughter from behind once, Prince heard her shriek, my uncle is so glad Prince was in his crate. When we go on walks at the regional park I walk him away from the trail, nobody wants to pass to close. When they ask me, "does he bite?" I just say, "He's got teeth!" :D

I lived by myself this summer. Cole was my constant companion. Everytime a delivery guy came to the door, I would let Cole go crazy and then put him in a sit/stay. I like that they are a little scared of him. I won't tell them that he is terrified of plastic bags and the vacuum!! Such a coward that one....

I'd say that people who don't know Scrapper are kind of intimidated by his "look" with his cropped ears and black face and that intense stare he can get. But that's fine with me - I don't want every stranger who comes by to assume that my dog is harmless. People who do know Scrapper realize that he's just a big sweetie who wants to lick and play with them - though I have no doubt he would become threatening if necessary - I've seen it. I think, in general, some people are just afraid of "large" dogs - meaning anything bigger than a cocker spaniel.

i've found that a lot of people are a little wary of my boys, but reactions vary. Men usually make a comment like "big dogs for a little lady" and such, but i kinda like the fact that they won't come near me. they don't usually bark, but apparently look scary in their curiosity to see who's at the door :rolleyes: tyler can "look" very mean when he just stares (our lil gremlin) but i don't think tyson could look mean if he wanted to - he's the growler/barker at times, though. my problem? when people are all excited to meet them. tyler is still the jumper (i'm trying my best, but he jumps on everyone but me!) and it's so hard to explain to people that want to pet your dog how to help me correct the jumping by turning away . . . etc. and i hate it, absolutely hate it when people walk by and make noises at the boys, clicking, whistling, kissy noises, whatever - it just riles them up!! of course, the people learn its not so smart when the boys go lunging at em (not really lunging, more like excitement to see where the noise is coming from - but 2 big dogs suddenly turning towards you can be kinda frightening . . .)

The people who need to know the boys are nice know. The people who don't need to know, don't.

Omar would probably bite someone if he felt we were threatened. Magnum would probably just lick them to death.

When we first meet anyone I will let them pet Magnum and not Omar. Omar is very leery of strangers.

When we first moved in, the little boy next door asked me if we ride Magnum and Omar. :D It was the cutest thing I've ever heard.

My favorite story happened when we lived in TX. The alarm guy was out to repair a problem and the boys were out of their crates (sometimes I put them up when contractors are around) and I told the guy he could walk through the kitchen because I was holding Omar and he wasn't barking anymore. He told me "It's not him I'm worried about, it's him, the silent one. He keeps following me around just watching me." and he was pointing to Magnum. :D

Have to admit that even at 5 months old, Sasha has the bark of a much more mature adult!! I do feel pretty safe outside with her at night....because she is so alert and protective.....our neighborhood is not well lit, but she truly has a 'sense' to hear anyone....She will bark furiously at ANYONE she sees....even people who she has let pet her previously....until they are out of her sight.....i used to try to subdue her, but i am learning it is a good thing!! What is hilarious is that as soon as they say her name..."Sasha".......she truns to jello!!!She is truly a big baby who just wants to play all the time.....but only with those who know her!!
