appropriate amount of time in crate for dog?

I have done searches on BW and searches on Google and have come up with nothing but how to crate train your pup! I am curious as to how long a dog should be left in a crate during the day when no one is home. A friend of mine leaves her one year old Chinese Sharp-ei pup in the crate for about eight hours a day, without potty time - is that too long? If it is, what is the correct amount of time? I never leave Asia in there for a long amount of time so it really isn't an issue for us...

Any thoughts would be appreciated

For a on year old dog, I think 8 hours in the crate is okay. Riley is 9 months now and she stays in the crate for 8 hours during the day. But, for a younger puppy I wouldn't let them stay in the crate for 8 hours without a potty break. I think it depends on the individual dog though too...some pups might be able to hold their bladders better than others. There are tons of pet sitters out there that can come in during the day and take a puppy out for a walk and play time.

The general rule is one hour for each month the dog is of age.

Tuggy had to stay in his crate for 8 hours a day even when he was a little baby. I had no choice, my job is 1/2 hour away. When my dh is home, he wasn't in the crate that long, but the 2 weeks that daddy isn't home, he was stuck.

He has adjusted to the crate well. He goes in there when he wants quiet time! Of course he eats in his crate also.
