Apples?

Hope this is the correct forum... We have an old apple tree in our yard (we just bought this house in April so this is our first apple season) of course there are apples ( tons of them) dropping and Mason and Aspen think it is their own personal buffet line.... I swear i read that apple seeds were very dangerous to dogs so i am freaking out... The only way to "solve" this problem would be to cut down the tree which would be sad as it is a big, old tree. Are they dangerous??????

Apple seeds are on the toxic to dogs list. I believe that you can go to the feeding forum and there is a post that lists toxic foods. I would be very concerned knowing that tree is in their reach.

If you're dead set against cutting the tree down, I guess my best suggestion would be to be sure and pick up any fruit that falls down each day. You may have to check every time you let them out. It might sound like a pain, but it's better than sick doggies!

Here is a statement about apples seeds that I found for you

Pits of most fruits (apples, apricots, kiwi, pears, Avocados, peaches etc.) - These pits or seeds have a toxic effect and can cause, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness and possibly death. Apple seeds for example contain small amounts of cyanide. Feed to much and your dog will get sick. So avoid the seeds and pits of most fruits and you should be OK

Maybe put a chickenwire fence or something around the tree about the proximity that the apples fall in. If that would even be a deterence to them.

I would be concerned if they ate the whole apple and ate multiple apples a day. I don't think and occasional seed would hurt them. I think fencing off the tree would be a good idea.

A few weeks back Dozer puked up a pile of what I couldn't figure out! Then the next day I saw a half eaten apple in the yard. We have a tree on our side yard and the apples were tiny but he had been picking them! I found several other chewed on apples. I knew the seeds were toxic so I went out and picked every single apple off the tree and pruned it way back so hopefully there will be no more apples this year!

Dogs have to eat ALOT of apples to get sick - usually, unless your dog is really sensitive.

I would say 2-3 LARGE apples would make my dog sick, they eat the little fruits like the tiny apples that fall off the tree and right now its the plums that are ripe and fall off the tree that is the first place they go and gobble them up. But its not a whole lot otherwise I would have to rake them up and keep the dogs on leashes.

I have been religiously pciking up any fallen apples but it would be near impossible to get to every one of them, the tree is actually just on the other side of the fence, but like I said it is big so the branches hang over into the yard...we'll be sitting on the deck and all of a sudden we hear a big thump, music to Mason and Aspens ears as they know an apple has falled...then it is a race to see who gets there first, me or them ! I am going to make my hubby prune all of the braches that hang over the fence, he is just worried that that serious of a pruning will kill the tree...better a dead tree than 2 sick pups though. They are not left in the yard by themselves too much so I know that they haven't eaten that many but if I catch them with one I will "go where no mommy should have to go"....into the depths of their slimy jowls to retrieve said apple

A former neighbor had kids that thought is was cute to throw apples to Kiddo in the yard(former house also).I didn't realize what was going on until she puked a couple of times. It wasn't her kibble so I went out in the yards and saw dozens of apples. I threw them back in the neighbors yard and asked them to have a talk with the kids as the apples had made my Kiddo sick.
