Our Oscar listens great and is very well behaved but, when given the command to lay down he always grumbles and barks, and sometimes I have to give the command more than once. Anyone else's boxer do this?

Sometimes when Willis is really focussed on doing something else he will argue with me... like if there's a toy I am telling him to leave or that he has to wait for. When he starts doing it too much, I just go back to really consistent training for a few days and it reinforces that he has to listen no matter what.... silly boxers.

Pulling out my dog trainer hat...

You should never give a command more than once. If you give it and they don't listen, you should - without saying a word - place them into the position. Down is a tough one...it's submissive...but they need to do it when told.

What worked for us...when Mabel went down on her own, she always got a cookie and TONS of praise. When I had to help her, she got nothing. I didn't yell at her or anything, I just didn't praise her or give her a cookie. I also tied her meals into it. When it was meal time I'd tell her "Down." If she went down, the food hit the floor and then I'd give her the "free" command, which means she can get up and eat. If she didn't go down, I helped her down but the food went on the counter. When I freed her there was nothing for her to eat. I then waited a few seconds and tried again. It really didn't take her that long to get it.

Once she had it consistently with a food reward, I slowly started weaning the cookies out. Sometimes she'd get one, sometimes she wouldn't. She never knew when she'd get it though, so she obeyed every time. Now she knows she won't always have a treat for listening but she'll always have my praise. Sometimes I swear she cares more about that anyway.

Anyway, consistency, patience, lots of praise. He'll get it!

Lucy talks back when you tell her "no" or "leave it". She always wants to have the last word. She usually follows the command but just needs to state her opinion about it.

Mine Loves to give me lip!

This is my second boxer, my first was a white female and she was so quiet. But i have a little boy now, and after every command he gives me lip! Barks growls and moans! But he does them. I have tried the spraying him with water and it does not matter, it is his wonderful personality! He is highly trained and knows all kinds of tricks. My friends and family say it's what i get, i was a smart ass child! Just love them, as long as they do what you ask, the lip is just something sweet!

How funny! I was just talking about this tonight with my husband. Joey's crate is in the kitchen/dining room, next to our table. We were eating supper and he kept yelping to be let out. I told him 'enough!' and he grumbled at me and laid down. LOL They are so funny!

Toffee doesn't grumble when I give her 'regular' commands like sit, down, or drop. She does make faces for some of her 'trick' commands like the treat on the nose. And sometimes I put the treat there and she just tilts her head and lets it fall off. You can tell she's thinking, "Mommy, this is THE silliest trick.... must I?"

Peja listens to my command but sometimes grumbles and "talks back" just like my 10 yr old skin kid.

Yes, we get "yelled at" by Skye all the time. Especially in the 'sit' command. I have also started saying in once in a low voice and putting him in the sit position. Otherwise it's just an argument between him and I--then I get frustrated.
