When I cut the grass in the summer, Mugsy gets bit to pieces by flies and he gets bumps all over him. It looks like he has the mosquito bites or the mumps or something. I gave him benedryl and that usually helped the bumps go away. DO you have fleas in the house right now? Are the bumps from one bite or are they from multiple bites?

garlic cloves

I've never actually tried to feed either of my dogs actual cloves, but someone once told me to put a dash of garlic powder across their food. Never even has to be enough they notice it, just enough to get in thru their bloodstream, it exudes a bitter taste in their skin.
Charlie is the first pup I've ever seen puff up like a puffalump from a reaction to anything. Fireants and spiders it seems sends his skin into fits, it starts off a bump, then a lump, and then he just looks like a stitched up puffalump dog. Gawd love Benedryl because the first time that happened to him, I didnt think to actually give him a tablet and I had to search frantically for vets as mine.......couldnt take him at the moment. Dont you know I got a new vet that night. But sure enough it happened again and one lil baby tablet of Benedryl and he didnt make it to puffy again. But anyhow long story short if he wont take a clove, try a sprinkle of powder in the food.

I'm not sure if its multiple bites... I treated the house last night and gave him a flea bath, gave him more benadryl and he's doing fine now. He didnt have that many fleas so I think he's just so allergic that he gets a couple bites and those bumps pop up. I think he gets them from outside [the fleas] he likes to go into the tall grass we have by the grassy running area... and his parents get them a lot so when he goes and visits them I always have to give him a flea bath when he gets home and treat the house.. he hasnt had them in awhile - fleas - i think its because his frontline wore off that he got them again. I'm getting him some more.

Going to try the garlic powder thing too, thanks Mwarlzabwark :D

I'm a fairly new boxer owner and have never had to deal with any sort of allergic reactions so far, but I just had to ask. When you say you give your dog benadryl is the OTC kind that humans take? I've just never heard of it before and was curious.

yes human benadryl...the vet told me to get either the capsule kind [pink/black] or the solid pink tablet. We give him 2 in the AM and 2 in the PM for an allergic reaction. The benadryl starts working really fast.. you can see the bumps start to go away in like 10 minutes - and they are completely gone in about an 45minutes. We were so scared the first time he had a reaction! We called up our vet [so nice to be able to call vet at home!!!!] and we were suprised when we got "BENADRYL" as an answer! so we tried it and it worked! Thankfully we've been able to prevent fleas for the most part but he's got the bumps about 3 times now.. we give him the benadryl for about 4-5 days and the bumps are gone. Oh yeah and I tried the garlic powder thing on his food and he went nuts over it! turns out he REALLY loves garlic... going to get him cloves tonight. Too funny!!!
