I am planning on switching Jaz to a new food. We have been feeding Canidae ALS for a couple months now and, following their formula change, she is having a large increase of runny eyes. A couple times in the morning we have had to use a napkin to literally scoop it out of the corners of her eyes. I am just guessing that it is due to the new grains in the formula, the barley and oatmeal come to mind. Anyway, I have been doing research on dog food analysis and came across the Taste of the Wild foods. This is something I can get locally and one of my friends feeds it to his dog and says he loves it. The website states it is an "all life stages" food. It is a little higher in protein than she has been getting with 32% vs. 24% in the canidae. I am just wanting opinions from others who may have had success with this food. When Jaz gets older I am planning on going to the wellness core foods, which they state is not meant for dogs under 1 year old. Right now Jaz is 4 months old and 30 lbs.

Hi Parboy

I just recently moved my dog from Canidae ALS to taste of the wile Pacific stream canine formula.

There are 4 different kids, Bison and Veal, Venison and smolked samonand roasted Wild Fowl and the pacific one.
I did a lot of research on this and it seems to be good. This brand is faily new in Canada just came in january and i was on their webapage and talking to their "vets" Caine is 9 months old and they suggested using the Pacific Stream as it has the least amount of protein then the rest of their formulas.
I have been feeding Caine on this now for about 2 weeks and he just gobbles it all up.

i stopped feeding him Canidae cause one day he just refused to eat it.

Well i can say so far so good. Look online at their webpage and read the reviews from people as well. There was one person who feeds her boxer that food as well.

Good luck with the change.

i havent noticed too much of a difference in the eye goopies.. Caine gets them bad and i have to clean his eyes every mornnig.. but it seems to have subsided a bit.

Good luck

I do not recommend TOTW as the company (Diamond) does not guarantee that their food does not contain Ethoxyquin which is a pesticide that is used as a preservative and is linked to causing cancer in lab rats. I personally only use foods that guarantee their product is Ethoxyquin free, such as Canidae, Solid Gold, Natura (Innova, California Natural, Healthwise), and a few others. If you are looking for grain free that is lower in protein I'd go with Wellness Core instead of TOTW.

Thanks for the tips. I really do want to feed wellness core, but I am just concerned as it states that it is not for dogs under 1 year old. I may try to email the TOTW folks to see if they use the ethoxyquin preservative.

I would love to use the wellness core, but it statement about only for dogs over 1 year old has me concerned. Doing a little more research and came across the innova puppy food. This is another that I can get locally and the ingredients look good and simplified. I may give that one a try until she gets old enough for the wellness core. It just seems that most of the grain free foods are all very high in protein, except for the TOTW stuff.

I've already done this, I know for a fact that they do not guarantee that their 3rd party supplier doesn't use it. And they tried to tell me that it is not a big deal and isn't shown to pose problems (wrong statement I might add). It is made by Diamond, and I have found that Diamond's quality control is pretty crummy. TOTW does not guarantee that they do not or their suppliers do not use Ethoxyquin. Feel free to e-mail them, I'm just saying i have done this and the reply I got was basically a no along with FDA allows so much in the food and it hasn't been shown to be a problem blah blah blah...except it is used as a pesticide. I think you would be just fine using Wellness Core on a puppy, JMO though.

Well I went to my premium pet store today to buy the innova puppy food, but it was the one thing of innova that they didn't carry. I decided to go with the wellness just for puppy. I already started mixing it in and so far so good. I gave her a little out of my hand also and she seemed to love it! I do plan to switch to the core at some point. Thanks again for the help!

If you really want to feed the Innova puppy or use it as a rotation food, you can ask them to order it if they contract with Natura for their other Innova products they should be able to order any of the Natura products for you, you'll obviously just have to wait a couple of weeks for it to come in.

I have Roxi on the Wellness Puppy as well. She has thrived on it since we got her 1-1/2 weeks ago. She was only 6 pounds at 9 weeks when we got her and she's now 8 pounds at 10 weeks. No problem with stools either.

I plan on doing the Welness Core as well. I know that my vet recommend switching from puppy food to adult food around 8 months. Maybe we can contact Wellness to see why they suggest not under a year?
