ProPlan.. getting a pup from breeders that put their show dogs on ProPlan. Anyone else here use it or have any comments on it? I personally may switch over to Nutro Natural Choice, but wanted to see what you had to say first.

I think ProPlan has gotten better than the past, they use chicken meal now I believe... but there are so many choices that are much better than ProPlan. Nutro is good, Wellness, Candiade, Flint River, Innova, Natural Balance are all top choices compared to ProPlan and Nutro.

Just read the first page of the food forum and it'll give you plenty of ideas to think about, or do a search for a specific food.

I just switched my dog to proplan. it not the best but it not the worst either my trainer and friend both have dogs who have won collectively over 100 titles and they both use this as well. One of there dog is going to Westminister(sp?) this year too. One thing I look for in a food besides the ingredients is the calories. Nutro only has 350 per cup while proplan has 450. Canidae and good of that nature tend to be around the 450 mark as well.

I'm beginning to look at calories too. My pup seems to have a super high metabolism. I'm feeding him Solid Gold Wolf cub which only has about 375 a cup. I must say though that he's doing great on this food. Excellent coat, firm stools etc. I'm impressed.

Innova has caught my eye though, one cup of the puppy formula contains 500 calories, and one cup of the adult contains 557.

Soon as this bag gets low I'm going to start the switching process.

Pro Plan is "okay" and Nutro Natural is "okay"

There are some much better kibbles out there. As other's have said, you can do a search. Here are a few super premium kibbles:

It's been said that dogs can survive on just about any kind of dog food, just as humans could survive on a steady diet of McDonald's. But do either really thrive on those diets? It's clearly obvious about humans.

Hmmm...are you free-feeding him?

Sometimes a dog's picky behavior is a sign of a larger issue.

When I feed my dogs, they have 10 minutes to eat, or their bowl gets picked up and they don't get another opportunity until dinnertime. Again - 10 minutes or the food goes away again. It didn't take very long for them to figure out the schedule. Now they don't miss a meal!

Question

I am considering switching Deuce's food from Purina Pro Plan to Wellness but I noticed they don't have a specific "large breed" puppy formula. How important is it that boxer puppies get a food specifically designed for a large breed dog? Deuce is 7 1/2 months old.

Hi Deuce's Mom:

Boxer's are NOT large breed dogs, thus they should never be fed large breed dog food.

Wellness is a super premium food. They don't offer "large breed vs. small breed" because that is just a marketing scheme that is not necessary and not reflective of what a dog needs.

Bottom line is (a) your dog does not need large breed dog food (Boxers are a medium breed) and (b) he doesn't need puppy food either.
