I got Louie at a pet store, because there aren't any rescue's near me that I know of. Otherwise, I would have looked there first.
But I haven't had any problems with him, other than kennel cough when I first brought him home. Other than that, he's been an absolute blessing to have. He's the most awesome dog.
I just couldn't resist him when I got him out of the cage.
But I have heard that often times, the pup's that come from pet stores, originate in puppy mills. I am afraid that Louie might have come from one, but luckily, there weren't any negative effects.

Unfortunately rescuing the pups from the pet store (and I know how hard it is to pass them by) only supports the stores and also the puppy mills. The rules of supply and demand. If people stop buying them there won't be a demand and no supply will be needed. I personally won't even go into a mall that has a pet store. I'm just not strong enough to do it as I could never ever pass by any dog in need.

Mouth rot is gum disease in such an advanced state that their teeth are rotting out of their head. When your dog has "doggy breath". He at least has the beginning stages of mouth rot. Some you can blame on diet. Some is genetic. If you are interested in knowing more Dr. Tom Lonsdale has made it his job to inform people of it.. He has a book "raw meaty bones" that deals more w/ mouth rot then raw meaty bones. a simple internet search will produce info as well.

PS I have to view puppy mills as a war. We sacrifice military personnel for the betterment of our lives. Puppy mill puppies may have to be scarificed for the betterment of the canine life.

It's a sad statement on greed.

JennaP you are so right. no matter how many times i see a puppy in a petstore, i will NEVER buy one. all it does is support the puppy mills. it is funny also how people think that they get a dog from a petstore "breeder" that it is different. guess what?? these dogs are puppy mill dogs. NO RESPONSIBLE breeder will sell to a petstore. NONE!!! and breeding your dog is just passing on the problem. some people are lucky, their byb dog has no problems, but the vest majority of these dogs have some type of health issue. and if your dog is under 7 you can not say you have a good puppy mill baby YET. things can change.
Sorry guys not trying to be negative, just stating MHO

Sube Ru,

I'm glad you agree. I was afraid I was going to get flamed. I have very strong opinions on the matter and some people don't care for that.. I have to NOT think about what will happen to the puppies. I like to think if they can't be placed by a certain age they are given away to a home that will love them. That is my hope anyway.. But I know buying one of them, endangers many more. I have to remind myself of that every time I see a pet store full of babies...
