Anyone had a heartworm positive dog previously?

I am thinking about adopting a 3 year old 40 lb female boxer that has tested positive for heartworms. She is due to start treatment soon. I'm worried about her prognosis especially with the predisposition for heart problems that boxers already have.
Have any of you owned a boxer that was positive and treated? How did it go? Any long term effects?

Heart problems and heartworms are two different things. Depending on how infected she is, once treated there shouldn't be any long term side effects.

Yes, I have Milo who was heart worm positive when we got him. He has undergone all of the treatments and is doing great. He is having absolutely no problems and acts like his old self again. While going through the treatments he would have days where he just wanted to sleep or didnt want to eat and play. However, we have been very fortunate and are very glad we went through it with him. He is due to go back for his annual test this month to make sure there are no heartworms left. Keeping our fingers crossed.

My old lab had heartworm and was treated when he was seven, he lived to the ripe old age of 15.5 years. We saw no indication that the heartworm had slowed him down one bit. Good luck with your rescue!

Hogan was heartworm positive when I adopted him and I put him through treatment with no ramifications. I closed off my yard so that he could not "run", but he could walk around and use the bathroom and get outside to stretch. I used games that made him think things through to occupy his time while he went through the treatment.
I would never let a HW positive finding deter me from adopting.

Thank you SO much for your thoughts!

We have been approved to adopt. She gets her first phase of treatment 12/20. We will be allowed to take her home after 10 days. She will need to be kept quiet 30 days at the least. We will be finishing her treatments at our vet.
Keeping paws crossed all goes well!
