Hi,
I'm pretty new here, just a few old posts.
Sigh
Yesterday I got the call that My Otto looks like he's heading down the cancer path. Our test results are going to the lab, and may be back Tues.

Anyone from MN who's done this, can you give advice? We think he's at least stage 3A. He's got BIG glands in at least 5 locations:neck, shoulders and flanks. These guys are so muscular that we didn't know until he neck showed like mumps! Help! How likely is it that any chemo protocols can help now? What paliative care should we be aware of? Our kids 6th gr and 3rd grade don't know yet, and my husband is out of town this weekend, so I'm the one sitting on this bomb right now. Sigh

Thanks for all your help!!
Dawn

Dawn: Have you tried calling the university vet school? Given the quality of the UM, they probably have a pretty good program there and may be able to provide you with some good information and contacts.

I'm very sorry to hear this and wish you and Otto the best. Do keep us posted.

Although I am not from MN, I have walked the Lymphoma path with my angelicon Blizzy. I too have kids. My older daugher is in 8th grade the younger being 4. It was tough telling them. The older of the two we explained WHAT Blizzy had, the younger one we just explained that Blizzy was "very" old and very sick.

I helped her to the Bridge on December 26th. I have no words of wisdom in terms of treatment as I opted to let "nature" take its course. Blizzy was so far gone in terms of the cancer when we found out that nothing would have helped. The only thing I can tell you, is take each day at a time, enjoy each and every second. Spoil that baby like he's never been spolied before. Take lots and lots of pictures and make many many great memories.

I, in a way, am glad I knew Blizzy's time was limited, and not just wake up one day with her gone. I was able make every day she had special. Never a harsh word to her. Never a scolding or repremand. I kow her last 6 weeks were the best. I was able to give even more hugs, kisses, and swet words than before.

You will be in my thoughts. Hopefully, you will have treatment options and your baby responds well to them.

If you do a search on these forums you will find many many postings about Lymphoma (sadly, a lot of us have gone through it)

I'm so sorry you're having to live with the cancer beast. I helped my Kiddo to the bridge just under 2 months ago because of lymphoma...hers was more advanced than yours and she lived 3 months with a lite chemo protocol. We never were able to acheive remission. Visit www.caninecancerawareness.org for some useful info .....many lymphoma dogs do acheive remission with chemo treatments and prednisone. Hopefully your vet will put you on the right tract when the lab results come back. Keep us informed and don't hesitate to ask questions.....FYI your dog can pick up on your sadness so try to be as positive and live as normal a routine as possible with Otto.....

I don't know what type of lymphoma your dog has but Lizzie was diagnosed with cutaneous lymphoma in February of 2005. She had a lump surgically removed and took accutane once a day for six months. She has had no recurrence of this lymphoma. Maybe this will be helpful; I will say a prayer for your baby.

yes, it's cancer

Hi,
After almost two weeks of roller coaster emotions, we're not done with that ride I'm sure, since our kids don't know yet, we've decided NO chemo. Even before we knew the cost--$5000+ is the latest estimate, we weren't sure we wanted to commit to invasive drugs, illness response and fluctuations in our already busy lives--we wanted to spend Otto's last days together, not with him alone with Drs in some lab. I'm sure they're nice and Otto loves going to the vet--he's a big wierdo!

We've checked in for a list of signs of distress and I'm just puuling back from the full-court press of the vet's office to do more testing. We'll just see how the next few weeks go here and once the kids are done with school they'll be told gently. There's a packet of grief info we can check out from the UofMN vet clinic site.

It's a sad business dying, but it IS part of life, like it or not. We are reminded of how our better selvles can show when the time limit is real--a wake up call. Take nothing and no one for granted. It has helped me to reach out in my faith community and with friends to new levels of closeness-heart to heart, the grief shared helps. Thanks to all who shared kind words and messages of hope! Happy Mother's Week to all, why keep it condensed into just one day?!

Sorry you're having to live with the cancer beast. There are some holistic approaches that claim to make life a little easier for the dog when living with the disease. Positive vibes headed your way.

I'm so sorry

I'm so sorry you are in the same boat that we are because drowning is no fun. We just rec'd the news yesterday that my Lizzie Jane has lymphoma. We are not over the shock either. I haven't decided what to do about treatment yet. Boxers are such wonderful animals in sooo many ways, but THIS is NOT one of them. I am very sorry that you are also having to go through this. I'll keep you in my prayers,
