My puppy was barely touching the Nutro large breed puppy food, so I switched to Pro Plan...has anyone used this brand? Would there be any reason to recommend against it? He's seemed to pick up his eating a bit. His last vet visit at 12 weeks weighed him in at 16lbs. Any help is appreciated!

Hello and Happy Holidays!

We put our puppy on pro plan after we switched her from the breeders food and she loves it! She is 4 months old and is weighing in at 30.5. She is a very healthy boxer. I would highly recommend the pro plan. Plus, I know other who use it for their pups and like it too. If you have any questions, let me know.

Thanks!

I feed Nash ProPlan as well, she seems to enjoy it. She gets dry for breakfast, and at dinner I mix in a little canned. Sometimes, if I have made a home-made stew or soup, I mix in a little of that too.;)

Our vet really likes the Purina products, and highly recommends ProPlan, so I thought that I was doing a good thing for her. I have been reading previous threads, and have noticed that a lot of members feed Nutro, or Innova. Am I being a bad Mommy by feeding her the ProPlan?

I fed ProPlan Puppy formula to my Maggie when she was a puppy. The research I did at the time pointed me to ProPlan as being one of the best "store brand" dog foods available. I wanted a food which was readily available and fairly inexpensive and that was of the best quality I could find with that criteria. There are some byproducts and preservatives, which bothered me, but overall I was pleased with it and Maggie liked it very much. She gained weight and muscle and grew quite rapidly in fact. So rapidly that I decided to switch her to adult formula at 8 months of age.

At that point, my pet store owner recommended Innova and/or Precise as being much better food for my dog. I did more research and decided that Innova was the brand that I felt most comfortable feeding me dogs. Thus, I made the switch and have been very pleased that I did.

I would rather feed my dog ProPlan than Science Diet or Ukky-Nuba or Iams, that's for sure. It is my opinion that ProPlan is a much better quality food than any of those.

One thing I did notice is that there were a LOT of stools with ProPlan. My dogs pooped 6 to 7 times a day! And had LOTS of gas too. With Innova, not only do I feed about half as much (3 cups a day for very active dogs), but they only poop 3/4 times a day now, solid and FAR LESS GAS than before. (It hasn't been eliminated, but they have less gas on Innova.)

That's my experience with ProPlan, for what it is worth. Good luck.

Thanks for the response Sabrina and Dan.

Just for an FYI .. you cannot purchase ProPlan in the grocery store. I used to purchase ONE there, but my vet suggested ProPlan, it is a step up and can only be purchased in pet food stores, at least in Canada.

I haven't noticed as many stools as you had experienced Dan, and for gas, my vet suggested their "lite" formula, as it has more fiber, and it has definately helped.

As far as preservatives, I read the label, and they use vitamine E, is that okay? I don't see BHT or BHA listed, which led me to believe that is was a good product.

I feed Proplan Beef and Rice to my two and they seem to do very well with it, the only problem is the amount of stools, like Dan said. I feel like I am forever scooping poop, which is leading me to find another brand. I think I might try Wellness again. I was told by my vet that Minx is allergic to peas, however she had some the other night (Dalton threw his on the floor, and I was lazy, and called in the "cleanup" crew). Minx had no reaction from them, Wellness has peas in it, but they are pretty far down on the ingrediants list. If she does have any reaction, she just gets bumps on her. We'll see what happens. But I really like Pro-plan, the cost and the availability of it, so if you don't have alot of poops I would stick with it.

I've used ProPlan (lamb and rice) on all of my dogs and they just love. I tried to switch to Science Diet (wonderful mother in law knows it all!!!) but they hated it. I just put Apollo on the large breed and am always trying to keep him out of the adult.
