If only someone who wants to consider breeding would do some research first, they would quickly find out what responsible breeding is all about.

You are right. Responsible breeding is hard work. I guess for a lot of people it is easier not to worry about doing it 'right'. Ignorance is bliss.

Thank you for the above links!
I will put them in my favorites. Such clear and informative sites. I think if anyone considering breeding would read all four of those links, we would have many, many less homeless pets and backyard breeders.

A little of subject

This is a little off subject but the comment about putting it in the newspaper brought this up. There is actually someone in Va Beach that paid to put an ad in the paper explainging how Labradoddles are not a breed and how they are mixed breeds and if they wanted to buy a mutt then to go to the shelter and if they are going to buy one then to make sure both breed health testing were done on the parents. It was actually a very well worded ad and I hope it got through to alot of people. Glad to see someone out there was willing to pay to get the word out. Just hope it doesnt fall on deaf ears(eyes lol) She even gave her email address for those who wanted to know more.

Great link. I too would love to see that on a front page.
When I hear people (and I know one) that talk about breeding their dogs because they are so very cute and you'll make big money... it really makes me sad.:( It's really too bad that money is the only thing on peoples minds... what about those innocent pups?:( I have always firmly believed that breeding should ONLY be done to BETTER a breed, health wise and conformation.
I know that boxers are getting pretty popular with the BYB's because they are number 7 on the AKC list of breeds. Since they are popular people are really out to make a buck.:(
Then that's when I'm really happy their are really wonderful breeders out there... like PawPrint and Draymia for example... and to all the other great boxer breeders... thank you for preserving our wonderful breed, while so many are out making things worse. I know that even after the boxer rides this popularity wave and health and temperment might get worse in some... I know I'll be able to still find a healthy wonderful boxer from a breeder who is truly out to better the breed... those that always have and always will; thank you.

Disagree with alot of the article....

Sorry to buck the trend but I disagree with much of what the article stated. First off, I don't care for the general widescoped label 'Backyard Breeders'.

Why and who gives just a select few the right to breed what they consider are dogs that represent the perfect standards of the breed. I totally agree with the fact that respectable breeders understand what the 'standard' traits of a particular breed are but again this information is totally subjective in nature. How you perceive YOUR dogs might be different than how I perceive them.

Again, I understand the intent (or so I think) of the article. The basic premise is to put an end to unwanted pets being born daily throughout America. It almost seems as if these select few people known as 'Breeders' are the very ones that make such strong atttempts at thwarting peoples ideas to breed their family pet.

Yes complications can and will exist from time to time and I would think any responsible and knowledgable person should be aware of this before allowing their dog to breed. I praise true breeders that are in it for the love of the breed. The ones that want to see that the breed stays strong and true. It just bothers me that people have this preconceived idea that if you bought your boxer from a local person via the newspaper, you've bought a BAD dog from a 'BYB'. The article then eludes to the fact that many dogs bought from BYB's are turned into shelters and left without food,etc...etc.. You explain to me how the propensity of this happening to buying a dog from someone locally to some notable breeder changes the likelihood of someone keeping the dog? In case you didn't realize it, boxers that are sold by BYB's arn't exactly free. Most people that plan on spending over $500 for an animal have every intention on keeping that dog for a lifetime and plan on doing whatever it takes to make a loving pet for years to come.

Also please explain to me how respected breeders insure 100% that their puppies go to a good home? Do they come out for a survey or is it the typical face to face interview? How can this article imply that puppies sold from BYB's or breeders are more likely to be backyard, stay outside all night dogs? How can they determine any unfavorable choice of action to come from pet ownership??

I agree with the statement that just because you have a purebred dog doesn't neccasarrily give you the right to breed. But in the same token, it doesn't mean you don't have the right to breed your purebred because you arn't the short list of respectable breeders in your area.

Point in case, my last boxer (Baylee) was the runt of the litter and she deviated quite a bit from what I consider the standard look of the boxer thus the reason I immediately had her spayed. I knew that she wasn't breeding material because I cared enough to keep the integrity of the Boxer intact. However my current boxer (Jake) that was bought from a local person in my area is much closer to the boxer standard. I can't take him anywhere without getting mobbed with compliments about how gorgeous he is. After seeing him, I fell in love and knew he had the BOXER look that I so dearly love although he didn't come from a reputable breeder.

Mind you I have been to countless dog shows and have been around boxers for years so I would like to think I can tell the difference between the standard and a deviation from the norm. Jake has absolute perfect markings and I like to think he might have been show ring quality if I had pursued that avenue. Jake will be our household pet for years and years to come and he will be neutered at 6 months of age. Although I didn't buy from a reputable breeder, I plan on picking every flea off of him, and doing whatever is needed of me as a RESPONSIBLE pet owner.

It just upsets me that BYB's all get such a bad rap. I realize the magnitude of the problems that usually coincide but nobody has the right to say, you can't breed the dog, even if you have an AKC registered dog. Is a respectable breeder going to be able to sell her white boxers any easier than a BYB? It hurts me every time to punch the letters BYB meaning Backyard Breeder because that term is used so loosely.

One last point, take away all financial gains from breeding and see how many people all of sudden find other interests. If it was totally a cause aimed at bettering the breed, give the dogs away for free to people that meet your restrictive standards. You can't tell me that deep deep down, the hassles become worth it after you've had a successful litter.

I realize this article was written for the masses and the masses should read with much interest. I've seen people breed and breed for money and makes me more ill than you can ever imagine. I think those people are the dregs of this earth. Dogs arent cash cows or money making machines. They should be beloved additions to ones family however if you understand the standard of your breed, you should be allowed to responsibly breed your animal without being considered a BACKYARD BREEDER
