This information is coming from my brother and I don't have enough of it to piece together anything. He said he heard on the news that some "major brand dog foods" were being recalled.

I have checked out a few sites and haven't seen anything. Curious to see if anyone else heard any news on this.

I don't know if this information will help answer your question but I've been in the pet retail business for 20yrs. Almost all the major dog food companies have had recalls at one time or another. For the last 7 yrs I have been in the natural and holistic side of the pet industry and as of last yr our store decided not to carry any more dry dog food. We were carrying the top of the line natural dry foods last yr. The last straw last yr was with two major companies who boasted having human grade naturally preserved food. Both companies had bad food( mold) that was recalled and to make matters worse they did not notify the retailers until customers complained or dogs refused to eat the food. When we asked why they did not let us know they blamed the distributors.
They also said it was okay for the dogs to eat the moldy food!
this year I'm out of touch with whats happening with the dry food and I'm glad. My furkids eat homemade food.

I'm wondering if it might be tied to the FDA report about phenobarbitol in dog foods. There was just a recent thread on this that had a link to the FDA site.

That's a possibility. Some brands of Nutro were on that list and they are very big and powerful in the dog food industry.
We get a retailers trade magazine every month, that lets retailers know whats going on in the industry. The last issue had a article on the phenobarbitol in the food. I guess they wanted to help retailers reassure thier customers about the FDA report.
I don't have the article here because I taped it on a freezer at work for people to read. But it kinda said there is only a small amount (milligrams) in the food so it's not enough to harm the animals. Thats the best they could do, I would think any amount will be harmful after long term use.

Hi all, I feed Nutro,Is there something I should know about this? Or should I switch my brand?I went to Nutro thinking my babies were going to be getting good things,I live in a small town and drive an hour to get food now at a Feed & Grain store. And the only other kinds are ,Science diet or commercial brands, and that is at a Pet Smart and I do not want anything that is going to hurt them.
Major - Nutro Puppy
General-Nutro Chicken & Rice

Nutro has several types of food and I can not remember which ones were tested. It was with food on the east coast. So most of the Nutro is fine I guess. I'm trying not to be negative because majority of the population will feed dry food. When a company grows and the supply in demand grows you can expect to have defect problems with the food. it's probably good to try new companies until they get too big. Julie might know which nutro food it was but that was just those bags they tested so I guess it's like russian roulette.

NUTRO

I feed my boxers Nutro chicken & rice. Should I switch? After reading these articles I'm not too happy about Nutro. Is that Old mother hubbard food okay or any other suggestions? My male boxer only has good stools if I give him a carrot bone every few days. I stay away from rawhide bones as he vomits them up (yuck) my female doesn't have any of these problems at all. Any ideas or suggestions? I've already tried yogurt & flaxseed oil since he also has a rash & is on predisone(not sure of spelling)
