spencedawg, I would say the earlier the better. I didn't have Greta as a puppy ~ I adopted her at 3. When she came home with me, she knew sit and that was about it. She learned shake, stand, lay down, off, and she just learned to speak! She learned each one in a couple of days. She has her own way to tell me she has to go outside. I've heard many people have had great results with bell training. You might want to get a smaller one so it doesn't bang really loud &/or scratch up the door.

Consistency and extreme praise really, really pay off. Boxers really thrive on that! :)

Maggie can ring the bell to go out, sit, shake hands, up, down, lay down, and rings the wind chimes if she's hungry. I am working on teaching her to sing. She does this howling like singing to the phone tones. So, If I could only get her to do it without playing the tones( some of them are songs).... Next I'll try the bang bang.

Our pup Kasch (4 mths) sits, lays and shakes pretty well. He goes and sits by the door and will grunt at us once if he's got to go outside. If you miss the grunt, you can bank on an accident. LOL. I'd never heard of the bell until I read this thread.
I'd love to teach him some of the new tricks you guys have talked about....but I'm working on getting him well first! :)

My Jamila is 14 months old and knows sit, stay, wait, bang bang, heel, drop, off, shake, other paw, high 5, beg, dance (waltz), fetch, get your toy, settle, paw, come, crawl, spin and go to bed. She's quite clever and trainable because she's very eager.

First I have to say, that the list of tricks with my two is not nearly as long as many of the posts. I parents have been watching my dogs for my for the last 2 months, long story. I told them to try and teach them some tricks. So my dad decided to try to teach tyson to hug because he saw it ton tv. Well tyson does very well at the hug part, but he feels that when you hug you should kiss to. and its not just a little kiss. its huge slobbery kisses all over non stop. its soo funny. but how do you teach not to kiss?

I just recently taught Roxy "under" and "over". Maybe she'll be ahead of the game if we ever decide to do agility :) When I taught her "under" I had her going under my legs. The other day we did "under" a couple times in a row and she got so into it that, at one point, I was standing with my legs together, told her to sit and instead, she accidently bopped her head into my knees trying to go under. Her face was priceless
"Over" is still more like "scramble". She's not the most graceful thing in the world, but we're working on it.

not to kiss

carebear.... that's a tough one because your face is a boxers favorite part... they look into your eyes for love and happiness and approval/disapproval.

I have a friend that told me the only sucessful way to teach a boxer to only kiss on command was to (during training sessions) put something on your face that they didn't like the taste of. Not easy to find either because I know my girls like almost everything - they had to use dabs of tobasco on their face to deter the dogs from just kissing without being asked.

something like peanut butter dabs when they would say "Kisses" ... their dogs eventually acknowledged "kisses" as a pleasant experience and didn't kiss OFF COMMAND for fear of bad taste.

HOpe this helps

Samson can do sit, lie down, roll over, and now we are working on jumping through hula hoops. He's not very crazy about this, but getting better. We also taught him "give me a hug" - he jumps up and hugs around your waist very tight with front paws. Some people like this trick, and it's not hard to teach since they love jumping on people! Overall I've been very impressed at how easy it has been to teach him new stuff. He can be hardheaded, but he is very eager to learn and you can just see on his face how excited he gets when those treats come out for training sessions!

Say "YES" and "Who's here?"

I had a black lab named Star many many many years ago, and I taught her to nod her head and that meant yes. Well, do to circomstances beyond my control I had to get rid of her, and take her to the only place I knew would take her and see that she got a good place to live, Houston SPCA. But when you would ask Star, "Do you want a goodie?" and she would nod and that meant yes. I also taught her (not sure how) that if I said, "You want a spanking?" and she didn't want a spanking she would sit and look at you with those big brown puppy dog eyes... I didn't spank her ever, but apparently she knew she didn't want one... AND she DID know the command SIT... So that was a bonus for me.

Well when I got Samantha I desided I would try to teach her to say yes... WELL, she doesn't do it as often as Star did, and you still have to ask her quite a few times, and nod your head a lot to show her how, but eventually she does it and then I give her TONS of praise and a treat.

We noticed that Samantha does something else that we have never seen another dog do, but was FUNNY! We have a 6 foot wood fence around our back yard, and there is the PERFECT knot hole in the gate that Samantha will walk up to and stick her eye at it so she can see out... So when we have guests over in the pool, and hot tub and just hanging out on the back porch we ask Samantha, "Who's here?" and we probably do that about 5 times and then it get's her curiosity up and she just HAS to go see who's here. Everyone gets a BIG kick outta that... Sometimes I have to say, "Is daddy here?" and that works too.. I'll have to get a picture of her doing it and add it to my gallery... Might take some doing since we're not quite at the outside party times just yet...

But I have taught her Sit, down, off, and up... But since she's mostly an outside doggie (I REALLY want to change that) it's harder for me to teach her more often. My next goal is to teach hubby that it's ok for her to be an inside dog. *snicker*

Help w/new tricks

We've taught Kasch how to shake, sit and down...we're working on trying to get him to speak. That's a difficult one, because he NEVER barks, very very rare that he does. He might if he gets really excited during play time or maybe if he's "conversing" with the dogs behind us. We can't seem to get him to do it on command though. Any pointers???
We can't teach him the "up" trick, because we've already taught him not to jump on people and I think it'll confuse him...lol
