You start them in the lie down position. Hold the treat under his nose then move it towards his shoulder. As he follows the treat he will sort of roll onto his back. When he's on his back (legs up in the air) repeat bang bang and give him the treat. Eventually they will associate "bang bang" with rolling on thier back and they will do it from a standing position. Its a big hit with all our family and friends that come over. Oh, I also point my finger as a gun when I'm saying it.

I cant wait to teach Porscha the Bang Bang trick.... thanks for the tip.

Diesel ( 9 months old) can sit, lay down, speak, shake, high 5, high 10, stand up and walk, and rings a bell to go outside. I am going to the bang bang..that sounds really cool. :)

Tricks

We have tought Brutis to sit, speak, jump and are currently working on "come", that seems to be the hardest one for him so far. I'm going to try the "bang bang" this weekend too. We got Brutis to speak by having him sit, then giving the command to speak. At first he wanted to jump up, but when he did we did not give him the treat and just repeated the command.

My 6 month old boxer is still peeing in my apartment. He gets regular walks but still goes at home. How did you teach him to ring the bell to go outside?

I tried teaching Spud the bang-bang trick yesterday.Hmmmmmm. I think it's going to take some time for him to get it  He's learnt the "down" command really well, but when I tried to move the treat toward his shoulder he shuffled backwards  Maybe I'm just not doing it properly. Will have to try again later.:D

Bailey rings the bell to go out too. We just made sure that we always rang it (even when he didn't) and then said the same phrase that meant he was going to the bathroom. (Which is...you have to do Tee Tee’s? my husbands family word for pee). Anyways, eventually he just figured out that when he rang the bell he would be let out. I think its mostly about consistency...oh it also didn't hurt that my cats figured out what it meant way before Bailey did. He watched them a lot too.

not necessarily a TRICK ... but very useful

I taught my Annie to "SHOW ME". when she comes over and nudges my arm... i say "show me" and she brings me to whatever it is that she wants. Hazel is just starting to follow suit as she likes to copy Annies' everymove.

The only thing that Hazel hasn't been able to figure out is how to open doors that start to shut behind her... I put strings on the door handles because Annie used to get "shut into rooms when she was a pup" . she figured out (after only being shown once) to bite the string and walk backwards to open the door. Hazel just nudges the string and steps back to see if it will open (kind of cute how she just sits and waits for it to magically open).

they also know the names of their toys. If i say "where's your ball" they bring it to me.

Age to start training

My Ali is just 6 weeks old, and is very hard to keep her attention. I was just wondering is it ever too early to start teaching dogs tricks. The tricks I would like her to learn are Sit, Stay, Shake, Play Dead, Holding a treat on her nose until I tell her to get it. I would also like to teach her to ring a bell to go to the potty. I am also wondering about how to teach her to ring a bell what size bell? And do you just ring it everytime you take it outside? How do you get her to start ringing the bell by herself? Thanks guys this site has helped me alot already and I am glad to be part of this community.

I started teaching Chloe at 9 weeks old she is just now a little over 12 weeks and knows Sit, lay down, shake, come, bang bang and we are now working on getting her to drop things..Chloe is also bell trained and all we used was a bell from Walmart in the crafts section (its about the size of a half dollar) and everytime we take her outside we used her paw to hit the bell and within no time she picked it right up...But now she just rings it to go outside and play too lol...I would start training your pup ASAP because we did with Chloe and her trainer for puppy class now uses her as demo at class time.. She is so amazed at the things Chloe knows for her age..Good luck with Ali!! =) Just remember patience is the key and it does pay off with some time..
