Taren... we kind of make a bet with my daughter that she couldn't train her to sneeze, but she did. She kept telling Abigail to sneeze then my D would act like she was sneezing Abigail would start wooing and wooing. Finally after several times she bobbed her head just like my daughter was doing but no actual sneeze. She kept working with her and Abigail bobbed her head and WOW a real sneeze. We praised her and she got her cookie, training treats. My D kept doing the trick over and over and now you say sneeze and Abigial does it.. just make sure to have the treat handy.

When we took her to the vets this past Saturday we showed them her new trick. The head bobbing is the cutiest ..it's just like when we sneeze head goes forward then quickly back up. The talking just came natural... she back talks us all the time and we've encouraged it "saying talk pretty".

I don't know about speak yet - I want Greta to learn that one!

As for paw (which I call 'shake')....at first, always have a treat, and hold it above their head so that they make eye contact with you. Once you have their attention, give the 'sit' command. When they are in 'sit', give the 'shake' command. When you say it, make sure to keep the treat where they can see it, and while they are focused, lightly grab their paw and hold it in the shake position. At that point, as long as they are still in 'sit', treat them. Be consistent, and repeat until they can do it on their own. Greta got it after we did it about 10 times. Once I say 'shake', she immediately raises her paw. I *LAVISH* her with praise, and give a treat. Now that she has it really well, she will do it without a treat.

The most important thing is to make sure you
1. get their attention and establish eye contact
2. have them sit
3. once in sit, give the 'shake' (or any other) command
4. when they do it (even with some intervention on your part!), treat them

It takes some work & consistency, but they will 'get it'! I try to practice her tricks at least a few times a day. The attention & praise will work every time! ;)

Good luck!!

Thanks! I have been doing all of that except holding the treat in eye contact. I'll try that when I get home!! Thanks!!!! As for "speak" I have been trying to have him "sit" then I say speak and I bark at him then repeat it as bunch. Maybe I'll keep trying with the treat at eye level.

My oldest brother taught his dog to whisper, at first I didn't believe him until he showed me and I must say, its amazing. I taught my cat to beg, that also a good one.
