Antoher crate question

Pacci goes in his crate every time we leave the house. I was wondering if there will be a point when we do not have to put him in it when we leave? He is 1 year old and we crate trained him due to urinating in the house when he was younger. I worry that he will get into things or go to the bathroom in the house if we don't put him in there when we leave, but at the same time I feel bad for him having to be in there all day while we are at work. We don't leave him in there at night and he is fine. Thanks!

Completely Boxer Crazy
I'm trying to get Harley (11 months) used to us leaving him with the living room and hallway space.
I'm never gone for long (4 hours is the longest I've been gone and that's only 3 days a week).
I think 4 hours is too long to start off with cause last time I left him out he peed in the living room and ate a hole in a little wicker drawer that we have in the hallway :rolleyes: . I also watched him through the window and saw him in the hallway howling. He did have a hollow bone filled with peanut butter and a kong with treats but he didn't finish either.
I'm going to try to leave him out tomorrow morning for my 1 hour morning class. Hopefully he will do better with only 1 hour.

Proof the dog by leaving him in one "dog proofed" room at a time, and leaving him for very short periods (5 min. then 10 min., then 20, etc.) and when you return, if all is well, PRAISE and reward.

Do this until the dog is masterful at behaving properly in the one room and then you can expand it ONE ROOM AT A TIME. Don't give the dog too much temptation at once. He'll not be able to handle it.

It is also very helpful to make sure the dog is well exercised and tired before leaving him, so that he more than likely will sleep while you are away and perhaps learn that when you are away his favorite thing to do is sleep. :) (We can dream, can't we?)

And be sure to leave plenty of the dog's own toys in the room when you leave so he has thing to keep him occupied other than your grannie's armoir! :)

Bella is a two year old boxer. She has been crate trained her whole life. I started off running to the grocery store and saying, "I'll be right back" over and over.

I was never gone longer then 20 minutes plus she had a good bone to keep her busy.

As I saw her becoming ok with this, I started doing it for longer periods of time. The longest she's been out if four hours but that is in my bedroom (luckily she doesn't like to eat shoes!) with everything, I mean everything away from her. If she can reach it, it's fair game to her. I also keep tons of toys, well her toy box, on the bed to keep her entertained.

Also, I take her to daycare twice a week and that has seemed to calm her down. I swear she has more energy then any other dog imaginable. After a long day I can trust her to sleep so I don't put her in her crate on those evenings when I leave.
