Boxer Pal
We gave in on the crate idea!
Our puppy Rocky (now 7months old) we put in a crate at night only..
He was on put in the crate during the day but at night in the crate he
cried so awful most of the time for two weeks. We did not sleep and we were seriously worried about his health and ours. We gave in and put newspaper down on the floor and at night we first let him fall asleep on the bed and then put him down next to the bed on a soft doggie bed with extra blankets and he slept all night from then on... For the last 3 months he loves to sleep
on the Lazy boy chair or couch in the front room and comes in at around 6:30am and wakes us up to let us know he has to go out to potty. The is now potty trained and is doing good, exept we have a problem with not wanting to leave him alone for very long. We take him to Pet Smart to socialize him with other people and pets on the week ends.
He is our first boxer, and we would not trade him for anything..We will
be starting school with him in April. He just wants to be with us at all times and I know that is not always possible. We do have another dog at home
that he plays with so he does have company. We know what your going
through and we wish you the best with your new puppy..J&Mary

Toby is only just a tiny baby, and wants to be with you all the time. It's your job to show him that being alone is okay, too. You do that in small steps, and right now "being alone" might mean inside the crate with the door shut, even if you're right there. So you start with whatever he can stand without much fuss. When Koda was tiny I would sleep on the floor next to the crate and put my hand inside for him to cuddle with. Of course we went outside in the middle of the night, and then he went right back in the crate and my hand went in there with him. It only took a couple nights and I could get up and go back to bed after he fell asleep. The best thing is to be able to hear him as soon as he wakes up for his potty break, BEFORE he gets going with the howling/barking. That way when you go to him, you're reinforcing him for waking up to go outside, but not for howling. So maybe you start out on the floor next to him, then after a night or two you'll be able to move to the couch, then after that back to bed with the baby monitor there to alert you as soon as he wakes up. Keep in mind every puppy is different and you may find he turns out nothing like the family dog you had as a child. Please be patient and give him some more time and in a few short weeks he'll be able to sleep through the night without needing to go out (although he may still want to get up at the butt crack of dawn
