Hi All ~

I took Cornelius to the vet yesterday for his yearly check-up and vaccinations. The vet didn't like the look of a tiny bump on his head so he aspirated (?) and looked at it under a microscope. He said he saw mast cells so he scheduled him to come back next Wednesday to have it removed. I guess I will know more next week but just wanted to get some good vibes from my friends at BW. I was ok yesterday in the office but I'm turning into a nervous wreck the more I think about it.

We've been through this three times with our two boxers. We actually just got biopsy results today on one of ours that had one by her nose. No matter how many times you go through it, waiting for the surgery and then biopsy results never gets easier. Ask your vet about giving benadryl before the surgery and then after to help with the histamine release during the surgery. There are many people on here with much more experience with these and are great at giving advice. Don't be afraid to ask questions, it doesn't mean you're questioning your vet, you're just trying to educate yourself. Hugs!

Thanks, everyone! MoparGirl - I've been following your thread. I'm glad things are looking good for Ella. Also, thanks for the tip about the benadryl, I will mention that to my vet.

Not only benadryl, but predisone too. Our vet said that research is showing pred can help shrink the mct.

Bailey weighs 60 lbs, and she was on pred for 2 weeks before the surgery. Was taking 1 1/2 pills every day (which is a very high dose), then 1/2 a pill every other day (wound up being just 2x) and ended the day before the surgery.

Sending some boxer lover your way!

Our vet said that research is showing pred can help shrink the mct.

In some situations pred. might be warranted for a large MCT in the hopes that it does a bit of tumor shrinking prior to surgery. This would help with the amount of tissue that needs to be taken and is more so used on those larger tumors or tumors in areas where there isn't much skin for adequate closure.
In a smaller MCT the use of pred. isn't as common. You have to consider the risks involved. *sometimes* pred. can hinder would healing. The first stage of healing is coagulation which happens during the surgery. The 2nd step is the inflammatory stage. Pred. will help to limit the amount of inflammation however some inflammation is needed for wound healing and no one knows how much slowing this process is too much.

My vet returned my call on Friday and told me that it would be OK to start Cornelius on Benedryl, although he said the area was so tiny that he didn't think he would need it. He also said that it was their protocol to give a benedryl injection (not sure it was actually benedryl but the same idea) prior to the surgery. Regardless, I started Cornelius on 50mg of Bendryl at night this weekend just to be on the safe side.

I feel better after speaking with the vet but I'll feel a whole lot better when we get the biopsy results back!

GOOD NEWS! No MCT

Got a call from my vet last night. The pathology report came back for Cornelius. It was a sebaceous adenoma. Basically a benign, non-MCT tumor. The pathology report said that cells that he aspirated were not characteristic of the entire lesion and there was no evidence of a round cell tumor. The excision was complete. That is the best news we could have hoped for! fiestaicon
