Another boxer

Hey all,

Well my wife and I have decided to get another boxer. We currently have a 2 year old male now. We are planning on getting another male that is almost 7 weeks. We will be crating him. We are going to have a neighbor let him out a couple of times during the day while we are at work. As far as house training or other training will it be easier beings that we have a dog that already trained? Can someone shed some advise of things we should and shoulden't do. Thanks for all of your help and advise.....

Wow,that's a broad question.
Congrats on your new addition. My personal experience has been its far easier training a pup when there is a well behaved older dog around to help.The pup picks up a lot from the older dogs behavior. It is best to treat the older dog as "alpha" when it comes to the pup. Feed the older dog first,let it go out ahead of the younger dog etc.

i agree with sidhewlf, it was much easier when we got chloe because maxi was 5 already and chloe did what maxi did. it helped alot.

When we got our 2 boxers we got them several months apart and we had an older boxer/pit mix here at the same time. I think as far as the house rules went it was easier but I do caution you to remember this...Puppies take an enormous amount of time. Don't forget to give your 2 year old his own special one on one time..or there may be jealousy issues. Please learn from our serious mistake as we had to have our mix baby put down only a few weeks ago do to the fact that the jealousy manifested itself in outright aggression and he severly injured my 13 year old. (we had no options as since it required an emergency room visit animal control was called in and they took all the say away from us) So please give plenty of one on one to your 2 year old and enjoy the antics of having a puppy around again.

Thanks for the tips.. Yeah we've thought about the attention thing.. I'm sure he'll be fine.. The main thing that I'm worried about is crating him during the day.. We will hopefully have someone to let him out once during the day.. Would he be fine?

Once during the work day for a 7 week old? LOL-NOT! Pups that age need to go every 20-30 minutes or so if you're trying to potty train. I would see if someone could come evry couple of hours at least. This way if the pup does go in the crate,it won't have to sit in the mess.

I agree. For the first couple of months they need to get out more often than that. I think it's one hour for every month they are old. As far as potty training, my second dog was a breeze. The older one showed him where to go and it only took a couple of weeks for him to get the idea.

Well I talked to my neighbor and come to find out there getting a puppy this weekend also. He said that they would be able to come over and pick our puppy up during the day which will be very nice. Now why wife is concerned about the attention thing. She's affraid that our boxer we have now we be neglected. I keep telling her we won't.

No,YOU may feel neglected by your current Boxer when it gets a playmate of its own species though. LOL

Ain't that the truth?! For the first few weeks after we brought Duke home Zuzu gave him all of her attention. My poor husband was so sad... he said that Zuzu didn't love us anymore! Well, after about a month of non-stop doggie attention, Zuzu is back to her mushy old self. Now we just have the problem of Duke butting in anytime we want to give Zuzu a hug first. Two is lots of work, but I think I am beginning to see that it can be tons of fun too!! Good luck with your new baby.
