Annoyed with the trainer at Petco...

My husband and I were at Petco last night with Riley. She was all excited, played with another dog for a while, and was generally worn out by the time we left, so her eyes were definitely red. While we were checking out, the lady who teaches the training classes almost came over with her dog, but from 20 feet away decided Riley has Cherry Eye and wouldn't let her dog near. She definitely does not have it, her eyes were red from being tired and were back to normal after a short nap at home. She asked when the last time we took her to the vet was (as if we wouldn't notice ourselves if she did have cherry eye). I don't know how common it is in boxers, but after seeing pictures on the internet of dogs that have it, I don't see how she could have though Riley had it. We were just annoyed and I had to vent.

That is strange that a person that is around dogs so much wouldn't know the difference. When Kaybie is tired or has played a lot, her inner eyelids show more and they are a pink color, making the corners of her eyes appear red. I have seen several boxers with this trait. It is quite common. They either have pigmented (dark) or unpigmented (pink) 3rd eyelids.....very common. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. I take Kaybie to training classes at Petco and I love the trainer.

I feel your pain...

We took Maximus to Kindergarten at PetSmart and dealt with a difficult teacher as well. She tried to make us feel inferior when in all reality, we didn't learn much from the class that we didn't already know. We were mostly there for the socializing aspect.

On the same note, I was there yesterday buying Frontline for Maximus (1 year old), but I took Lilly (3 month old) because we are trying to get her used to all kinds of different sights and sounds. The lady behind me in line saw the box and with a disgusted look on her face said, "You're not buying that for that puppy, are you?" Like I didn't know that the dosage would be too much for a little puppy. People just need to butt out!

It's surprising sometimes how irritating certain people can be, it seems like when ever I'm at Petsmart there is someone there that says something really stupid to me about Koa. I guess, the trainer is just not familiar with Boxers which is her ignorance & loss.
Koa gets the red eyes all the time when he's been playing outside & once he lays down for a little bit, poof it's gone!
Sorry you had to deal with that simple lady!

This is something i would be aggravated about also, but you have to remember as "WE" may go about dealing with something like this a different way some people are just making sure other are educated. I mean think about it if you were in a store and saw someone buying IAMS or a food thats isnt good for our babies....YOU would want to say something and im sure there are some of us that WOULD say something just maybe in a nicer way more like starting a conversation instead of the rude comment this lady made.

Especially when she only saw Lily with you....... Just remember BW members arent the only ones that worry and observant of other some just may not be poilte about it.

how truly frustrating! I would expect a bit more from a trainer! Besides--even if your boxer had cherry eye--it is not contagious!!!! A trainer, I would think, would know this--especially one who feels so qualified as to make a snap diagnosis from 20 feet away! I would have felt compelled to point this fact out to her!
I suppose, to give this person the smallest benefit of a doubt, she may thought she was being helpful, thinking that possibly your dog had an eye problem that you hadn't noticed--however there are much more tactful ways of approaching someone if you are concerned. I know I have encountered a few "less-than-informed" dog owners and felt I should say something to them regarding their dogs--I usually try to gently ask a few friendly questions about their dog first, then mention what I have noticed with a "gee--has she/he always had that really big raw spot (or whatever--I'm being dramatic for illustration purposes!)??? you might want to get that looked at,it could be a hotspot, etc..."

Good grief. Some people shouldn't assume things right off the back. She should have questioned you or your dh instead of assuming!! (uh, hello?)

Tre's eyes do get red when he is tired. He even gets grumpy. Just like humans.

That reminds me.... we went to Petco for dog training classes. We showed up at one, but, never again.

The trainer told me she doesn't approve of boxers getting their ears cropped. Her mouth almost hit the floor when she seen Tre with the bandages on his ears.... telling me things we already knew... going on and on and on and on... on why we shouldn't have cropped his ears.
