I was throwing the frisbee for Scrapper and Holly this afternoon. Holly was being her usual little sneaky girl self, trying to steal away Scrapper's favorite toy... I threw it low and fast, she raced over to grab it, Scrapper whirled and BAM! Holly ran right into Scrapper sideways, fell over on her front leg, yelping and screaming in pain. I saw her leg fold awkwardly underneath her, I cringed. She immediately jumped up, her right leg hanging painfully and uselessly, and ran in the house and got in her bed. I was horrified :( I called her vet and said I was coming right down (they are only literally five minutes down the road from me) "Oh, we don't have a doctor here right now...she's at lunch." I hung up and called my other vet's office, who I've known for years. Unfortunately, he wasn't in that day either. Cripes! I called the first vet back and said, "I don't care, I'm coming down there and sitting in the office until she gets back from lunch. What do you do when someone calls and their dog is bleeding to death?!"
I got Holly's leash, (Boxers sure are creatures of habit - when they saw the leash, they both started acting like they were going for a walk and jumping for joy; Holly on three legs...) jumped in the car and scrambled down there. I was worried half to death that she had broken her leg! When I got there, they somehow had changed their attitude and took me right in. (It probably didn't hurt to name drop this was Christina's puppy - she also goes there - when I called the last time.)
Holly was not in shock, but was obviously unable to walk on her right front leg. X-rays revealed what might be a tiny bone chip, but nothing more. Hopefully, it will heal quickly and with no residual effects. They wrapped her leg from elbow to paw about an inch thick all around to immobilize it. She refuses to put any weight on it with the bandage, even though I think she might be able to hobble on it a bit. I have to make sure the bandage doesn't get wet when she goes outside to potty (I have to put plastic on it. Tried it once, she proceeded to bite it off and didn't even think about going to pee) and take her back next week for more X-rays.
I am tremendously relieved that it is apparently nothing too serious. But I can tell you I was pretty scared when I saw her fall and heard that horrible cracking sound and she was screaming in pain.
Can you please send your healing BoxerWorld vibes to Miss Holly that she recovers as good as new? She is looking so pitiful now with her leg all bandaged up. Of course, she is getting lots of love and petting. Even Momma Christina stopped by to give her some love. What a day!
