I have been told that our Boxer Lucky 10months old is to thin, you can see his ribs and spine lumps, the vet says he looks okay. He eats 2 cups of dog food twice a day. He is happy lots of energy. and is growing height waise well. Do they not gain until later? Is this nothing to worry about? Help

Hi lucky4me -

First, please post your Introduction. This is something required of all new members, and should actually be your very first post ;)

www.boxerworld.com/rules

Boxers puppies and adolescents are somewhat lanky, and typically do not fill out until 18 months - 2.5 years or so. That being said, what are you feeding him? The very best thing you can do for him is feed him a very high quality diet. If you are feeding dry dog food, you can learn more about choosing a great quality dog food at www.boxerworld.com/feeding.

Outside of that, and assuming he is otherwise healthy, I'm sure he will fill out a bit in time :)

Boxer Buddy
amount to feed

We feed our 10 month old male 2 cups of dry Pedigree in the morning and 2 cups plus and 1/2 can at night. He seems to be a big boy at 57 pounds.

His sister (same litter-- not my dog) is a picky eater -- offered the same amount but chooses to leave food behind. She's 10 pounds lighter, very muscular, but you can see her ribs.

Hi Kismet -

Have you considered switching him over to a higher quality food? www.boxerworld.com/feeding has some great information in what to look for (and avoid!) in dry dog food.

Pedigree really is one of the worst quality foods out there. Here are their ingredients (for anyone who is interested):

GROUND YELLOW CORN, MEAT AND BONE MEAL, CORN GLUTEN MEAL, CHICKEN BY-PRODUCT MEAL, ANIMAL FAT (PRESERVED WITH BHA/BHT), WHEAT MILL RUN, NATURAL POULTRY FLAVOR, RICE, SALT, POTASSIUM CHLORIDE, CARAMEL COLOR, WHEAT FLOUR, WHEAT GLUTEN, VEGETABLE OIL, VITAMINS (CHOLINE CHLORIDE, dl-ALPHA TOCOPHEROL ACETATE [SOURCE OF VITAMIN E], L-ASCORBYL-2-POLYPHOSPHATE [SOURCE OF VITAMIN C*], VITAMIN A SUPPLEMENT, THIAMINE MONONITRATE [VITAMIN B1], BIOTIN, d-CALCIUM PANTOTHENATE, RIBOFLAVIN SUPPLEMENT [VITAMIN B2], VITAMIN D3 SUPPLEMENT, VITAMIN B12 SUPPLEMENT), TRACE MINERALS (ZINC SULFATE, COPPER SULFATE, POTASSIUM IODIDE).

LOL, pretty much all of the top ingredients are offensive. I can't even give them credit for "meat and bone meal" because it's so non-specific.

At any rate -- if you're interested -- you can do a search here on "premium kibble" or "WDJ list" and you will find many suggestons for higher quality food.

Good luck
