Hi, My name is Kaitlin and I own a Boxer but a girl that I met has an American Pit Bull Terrier and has to get rid of it. He is about a year old and is starting to be a little aggressive with one of her other dogs. My question is does anyone know of a rescue for the APBT? I have searched the web and only found 2 sites but they won't take any dogs in and she is going to give him to the shelter to be put down. :) I just feel so sad for him and I am unable to take him in myself because my buddy (boxer) who is also male and I am afraid that they would fight. If anyone knows of of either a web site or someone that might be interested please let me know.

Thanks,
Kaitlin

If you can't find it on the web call a local rescue and ask them for their help.. There are APBT resuces, sometimes the rescues are hard to find.. Do you know your boxer rescue in your area.. I know there is some FL boxer rescues, they would probably be able to refer you..

You can also try going to akc.org. They have breed rescue referrals. You won't find APBT rescues there but you will find referrals for similar purebred terriers that would probably be of great help.

I also tried to locate a local APBT rescue for a friend of mine but was unable to find anyone other than an all breed rescue willing to take the dog. What I was told by the few APBT rescue groups that I did find was that they are not taking owner surrenders anymore. They personally were only rehabilitating fighting dogs or pulling from shelters. Many shelters in our area do not adopt out APBT, they are euthanized immediately upon being surrendered to the shelter. Check with local all breed rescues if you can't find an APBT rescue. Good luck!

On a side note, if your friend is serious about putting down her dog, the appropriate thing to do is to take the dog to her vet to have it done. I believe that if she feels the dog needs to be euthanized then she should be with the dog as it's euthanized. The purpose of shelters is not to euthanize, it's to rehome unwanted animals. Unfortunantly there are not as many homes as there are dogs and so they are forced to have to euthanize.

So now the properly raised APBTs have to suffer even more because of the negligence of the poorly raised APBTs' owners? It's so sad that it has come to that.

Kaitlin,

This rescue should be able to help your friend.

Who We Are
R.U.F.F is a group we formed after meeting all the wonderful dogs and puppies we have taken in and saved from being Put to Sleep... We started out as a Breed Rescue only taking in Pitbulls and Bully type breeds... Now we rescue all breeds but still Specialize in Bully Type Breeds.

On the site there is an email for contact. Her name is Pam. I think she may be based out of Tampa (Hillsborough County) but uses a Petsmart in Clearwater (Pinellas County) for her adoptions each weekend. My sister adopted a little chihuahua/dacshund(?) pup from her several months ago and she was very nice to deal with.

Hope it works out for your friend.

Missouri Pit Bull Rescue is run by excellent people and a very large caring staff, they take in sooo many dogs, they website is pitbullsontheweb.com, if they cant take the dog, im sure they'll try their hardest to find someone in your area who will. YOu must try these people

You might want to try a search for "American Staffordshire Terrier" or some sort of combination. i believe that the Amer. Pit Bull Terrier is a Staffordshire Terrier, *i may be wrong but it wouldnt hurt to check that rescue too*

good Luck
Carolyn and Katie

P.S. There are also lots of all breed rescues too. try a search like
"albuquerque" "rescue" "animal" that should get you the ones you need
