I got it! I know the difference

English boxers bark with an English accent, and American boxers bark with an American accent... That's how you can tell the difference! American boxers also prefer coffe while the english boxers prefer tea... LOL

I had someone ask me the same question at the baseball park a few weeks ago, and I stood firm with him that there is only one type of Boxer, and he proceeded to look at someone else & tell him how he had an "American" Boxer as his police dog, and that there is a difference in American and English Boxers...blah blah blah. I gave him a puzzled look, and ducked out of the coversation.

I understand that a boxer is a boxer no matter where you live but have you seen some of the German boxers lately....there are slight differences between them and all the others. They have alot shorter nose and are very stocky. I mean I know that they are not disqualified cause of their weight but from the pics I,ve seen they are much more solid looking than others. I wish I could read german cause I'd like to see what their boxer club standard says or would it be the same as the AKC? I've even seen German Boxers advertised on breeders websites in a different area than the other boxers.

You don't need to read German to read the German boxer standard. Germany is an FCI (world canine association) country, so uses the FCI breed standard (as do most countries around the world).

As the "owner" of the boxer breed (the boxer is a german dog), that actually means the FCI standard is set by the German boxer club, and translated/distributed to the rest of the world via the FCI.

You can read the FCI standard (in English) plus several of the other boxer breed standards from around the world at www.boxerworld.com/standards

It is worth remembering, however, that although the different standards may use slightly different terminology, the boxer is still a German breed and *all* of the standards from around the world are based on the original German breed standard.

I think it's funny that people get bulldogs and boxers confused. We have had an English Bulldog since he was 8 weeks old and just adopted a boxer because we wanted a similar dog. I just bought a book on boxers and I swear they have a picture of a bulldog puppy in there. He looks just like our bulldog did. I showed my husband the book and he said - yep, that's a bulldog. They're both such cute puppies.

oh my goodness - were you at my friend's house last weekend eavesdropping on this conversation? His wife INSISTS that there are American and English Boxers - now....bear in mind before my dogs (who she has only known a couple months) she didn't even know what a Boxer looked like! Whatever.

This "discussion" went on about 3 hours before it got ugly. Maybe it was the drinks her husband (my long-time friend) made us, I don't know. Finally, I told her to get on the computer and prove it. She couldn't. She suddenly had a headache and retreated to her bedroom (most likely to pout).

Her take on it was that the English Boxers were more stout and solid with a more rounded head and wider muzzle....while the American Boxers were longer-legged, deeper chested, thinner built and had more of an egg-shaped head.

Yes, there are some variations in the Boxer look, and YES, I have seen more overseas dogs (mostly European) who have the look she called English. I have always assumed (maybe that is my error) that the breeders take the dogs of different variables that suit their "look" they want and breed those. It is a matter of personal preference, right?

Aye-yi-yi.....a Boxer is a Boxer is a Boxer.....they just have different colored wrappers.
