Amazing puppy....

OK.. Diamond "Indy? Ruff is absolutely a wonderful puppy. She is 11 weeks old and loves her kennel. I introduced it to her while sitting next to it and putting toys in for her to play with. If she walked in on her own id give her a treat. Well I have had her for 2 days, and she sleeps in the kennel in the other room without whining at all! YAY! I took her out before bedtime at 11pm.... then she didnt go again until I let her out the next morning at 8am!!! Whoooo hoooo

I am having a problem with her on the leash though. She WILL NOT walk at all if it is on! I have tried luring her with treats and toys... but she wont budge and just looks at me like get this thing off! What do I do?

Take it slow with the leash. Every time you put it on her use a lot of praise and treats. You don't need to walk her with it yet. I would let her drag the leash through the house for a while so she can get used to it. Make a fun game out of it. Be patient and don't ask too much too fast.

Our puppy was the same way at that age. Don't worry though! Now she's 14 weeks and taking US for a walk! We're working on heel.

I don't know how this will be received, but this is what worked for us this weekend.

We had the same problems with the leash. Allie just didn't like the thing that much. I was taking it slowly with treats, as mentioned above. However, I had also read an article in the Puppy Whisperer about "tethering" the puppy when you are around the house as an aid to housebreaking.

So, we started letting Allie run around the house with the leash on. She seemed to get used to it. We then tried picking up one end and sort of holding some gentle tension in there to see how she would react. She sort of didn't like it, but came over to us when we called her.....treat city. We did more and more of the applying tension (lightly) and treating when she came back to us. She got used to the "pulling" fairly quickly.

So, we took the next step and started tethering her to US via our beltloops. She liked being close to us, and exploring the house a bit (before we had her barracaded in the kitchen and living room). I took her outside with the leash on when I KNEW she had to potty, and I threw a flipping party when she went. Soon she forgot all about the leash because everything was back to normal.

Now, we have her walking in the backyard, and I have even taken her on two short walks around the street (about 100 yds total on pavement). When she gets ahead of me, I stop and she kind of yanks herself, but immediately returns to me.....treat, and continue walking.

She is really kind of training herself.

I hope this helps a little. Don't be afraid to read all you can, and try a little different approach. Something, likely patience, will work, and you'll be off and running before you know it.

Rocky was the same way

We brought him home when he was 9 weeks old - but he was raised by humans (bottle fed, crated, etc) since he was 2 weeks. THe crate was never an issue - he loved it. He also was a genius with potty training cuz they had been taking him out on the deck since he was 2 weeks as well.

As far as the leash goes - it took Rocky until he was about 12 weeks (so 3 weeks) to get used to it. Agree with everyone else - take it slow. First we had to put the collar on for a few hours at a time, take it off. Then we had to add the tags to teh collar (even more fun...). Then the leash.

I made the mistake of just putting the leash on and trying to walk him when he was around 12 weeks - WRONG. He kept biting it and trying to play tug with it. Eventually I let him drag it around inside and outside for a few days and then he tolerated it much better. But still took a few months for him to understand that leash meant go for a walk and now he sits whenever I grab his harness and lead. He lets me put them on - adn then we go. Perfectly.

Good luck - be patient! Even though puppies are amazing at some things, there definitely will be some areas to work on.

thanks for everyones advice. Indy is doing great on the leash now. I took your advice and let it just hang onto her while in the house... When we would go on walks and jogs she wasnt so hesitant to move along with me. I also held a treat and toy as we walked and it got her to move along and get use to it. Shes great on the leash so far now.

However! LOL... she is now using the bathroom in her kennel all of a sudden. She was great at first and seems like we are moving backwards. I have a spacer in there so that it is smaller for her size and she still uses it in there and sits on it like it doesnt bother her! :o( Dont know what to do. I am back at work and cant be here all day.

Sounds like she is having a hard time holding her bladder all day, if she is in her crate all day. I would highly recommend seeing if you can have a friend or relative, neighbor or someone come by the house once or twice while you are at work to let her to go potty.

I think Brandi has problems holding her bladder too. If someone misses her cue that she needs to go potty, she'll sneak downstairs and do her business. She's about 3.5 years old. I guess I'm going to have to use the crate for her more often. Unless she is actually having trouble holding her pee, I take responsibility for her bad potty training. I got her while I was still in high school and not-as-responsible.
