Maci keeps jumping up to get attention (but only when she is in the hse). I feel bad because i refuse to fuss her or even pay attention to her until she sits... Am i wrong doing this

I am trying to explain this to other people that see my dog to ignore her until she sits then she will learn to sit first without jumping up to get attention. is this correct?

jo, you are doing the right thing. and in time maci will stop jumping and be a well behaved boxer.any time you are training it looks like you are not being a good mommy but you know what is best. and who wants a boxer who is out of control. when she stops the jumping everyone will say wow what a great girl.

No, you're not wrong at all That's exactly what you should be doing.

If you reward a dog with attention when it jumps, it will keep on jumping - because jumping works. And if you won't give attention until she sits, then she'll learn to sit for attention instead - because sitting politely works.

it is starting to work but i had to do something as she has nearly broken my nose by headbutting me (by acident)

I am lucky as she only jumps up adults. she is so gentle with children (she has knocked over my daughter a few times but that is when she kidney beans and my daughter gets in the way by running over to Maci

We're just learning how to correct this is puppy kindergarten. The trainer suggests that when your dog jumps up, grab hold of his paws. It's not even necessary to say "no" or "down" just hold onto them and after 30 sec or so, the dog will start squirming and want to naturally get down. Let them go once this happens and do it each and every time they try to jump up on you. Eventually, they are going to learn that jumping up does not get them the type of attention/play time that they want and will stop.

I read The Dog Whisperer when Jake was a baby and this is exactly what they recommended. My oldest Daughter and I practiced this but my youngest and DH didn't. Guess who Jake still jumps on? When I come in the door Jake tries to sit (it's tough when you are wiggling that hard), but when DH comes in, he goes nuts jumping all over him and DH just starts telling him "no jumping". I have tried to explain to DH what to do, but he doesn't like ignoring him, so he deals with jumping.

Hmmm...I might have to try that. Tucker hates it when I grab his paws, but it never occurred to me that it could get him to stop jumping.

My Roxy always used to jump on everyone that came in the door. But when I found out I was pregnant in June I made sure she didn't jump on me. And now she doesn't jump on anyone. Sometimes she tries to get my mom, but that is b/c my mom asks her for "hugs". I keep telling her not to, and yesterday Roxy headbutted her and now her eye is swollen! I am sure it hurts, but I told her so!
