Am I Expecting To Much?

Rosco is 4 months now and responds to his name being called ( most of the time ). As of now he will do the following on command ( again most of the time ): sit, stay and shake. My question is there are times when he absolutely will not respond to his name being called or when commanded to "stay" he will walk away. I have always had Rottweilers before and have never had this problem, even at 3 months of age. Is this something to expect from Boxers, and if so, for how long.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve, it's not really a boxer thing, so much as a dog thing. It takes most dogs a while to "come" when called (when they don't want to) and to "stay". Recall is a very difficult thing to teach some dogs - it really depends on personality.

Just keep working with him, he'll get it. :)

4 months is still very young in the training process. I have always considered Boxers to be an obstinate breed ( have had 7 in my lifetime) or at least to have selective hearing . You will have to constantly keep reinforcing thier training.

I agree with KonaKoffe, 4 months is extremely young to expect consistency with commands such as recall or stay. But also boxers are independent thinkers, so reinforcement and using good training methods to keep it interesting/fun is important!

yes, i feel that you are expecting too much too soon. :)
at 4 months of age, your dog is still very young and barely beginning to grasp the concept of the commands that you give him. that is why he still performs them as you put it, "most of the time."

boxers are very independent thinkers, and you'll probably already know how full of energy they can be. the combination of those characteristics requires a training formula that includes plenty of patience. take it slow and your results will come. :)

Thanks for the replies. Like I said before, I have had 2 rottweillers who were much easier to train. I will keep patiently working with Rosco on his training. What really surprised me was that he learned the "stay" command much quicker than anything else.

boxers are extremely intelligent and ready to please. sometimes it just takes different methods for different dogs, but the good thing is that with proper training, patience, and affection, the results are usually the same. :)
good luck with your puppy. i'm sure you will be pleased in the end. :)
