Always Sniffing!

My boxer Patton has taken up a new past time in the last month...SNIFFING. He sniffs EVERYTHING. He sniffs so hard sometimes (like a piggy rooting for truffles) that he loses himself and is easily startled. Like any dog, his nose is the most important way of experiencing the world, but I'm starting to worry it's to compensate for another of his senses. Sometimes my husband and I swear our puppy is blind. He runs into everything. The other day, he was standing by the wall looking at me, and as he turned to walk away, he ran straight into the wall! Does anyone else's boxer sniff everything he sees? Thanks!

Yep mine does and there's nothing else wrong with his senses. I truly wonder sometimes if he has trouble sniffing given that he puts his nose up to EVERYTHING and buries it in things. He's been doing it for a good over 2 years and he's not much over 2 years old. It's truly annoying, but try as I might he continues to do it and it's the one thing I haven't broken him of.

Yes our boy sniffs EVERYTHING! Every time anyone changes an piece or clothing he has to sniff it and most of the time he goes in for the 'deep sniff' (i'm sure you all know what i'm takling about). Half the time he's just standing there sniffing the air and you just see his nose going. He really gets in there and smooshes his face into his beds to get a really good deep sniff. I mean i'd say 95% of the time he's sniffing one thing or another. I hate to say anything is annoying about him but that's the one thing that just gets to me sometimes because it's sooo excessive. Since we got him my now 4 year old has always called him her "sniffing doggy". We still love him anyways.

Yep I have a sniffer too. He always does a lot of licking. Both are annoying habits but as long as they are not medical issues I can deal with it. Someone told me that excessive licking has to do with whelping but I'm not sure the validity of that. With the sniffing I thought I might have gotten a Boxer that was part bloodhound but it's nice to see others also have sniffers in their "family".

My two live by the theory that if it is there it is there to be sniffed. I don't think I've every known a dog that didn't sniff everything, a lot.

Mine too!!!

Our pups are constantly sniffing!! Especially our female... she will even get jealous and follow my husband, me or our other 2 around if we have been around other dogs!! I wouldnt worry about it too much... to check out his other senses, try snapping behind his head on both ears (1 at a time) and see if he turns that way. As for his sight, if you can get him to set on your lap or on the floor with you, take your finger like you are slowly going to poke him in the eye and he should blink before you get to it. We were worried about this because our little guy is a white boxer with one blue and one brown eye. Hope this helps!! =)

Caney is a TOTAL sniffer. And a loud one at that It's pretty funny actually. She's a klutz too -- always running into things! It has never occurred to me that the two might be related (sniffing a lot and running into things) but I seriously doubt they are... it's just her curious, clumsy personality. Gotta love it!

I feel much better now. I thought I got a boxer that must have blood hound in it. I even checked to see if there were hounds in the breed. He will walk around the block and hardly lift his nose out of the grass. I have seen him find his tennis ball in high grass by tracking it with his nose

Thanks! I was a little worried that I was the only one who's boxers nose was busier than his tongue! Patton sniffs the carpet sooo intently he completely loses him self and forgets that anything else exists. Sounds to me like he's a typical Boxer!!! That's awesome. Hahaha...thanks for the reassurances!!
