I was looking up some stuff on joints for homework, and I came across an article that preached about how well aloe vera gel works for joint stiffness in dogs.

Brandy is getting old and has problems walking and getting up. She doesnt have dysplasia thank God but I think she may be starting to arthritis. I just wanted to know if anyone has heard of this and if theyve tried it and how well its worked. I thought it would be worth a try with her.

Thanks

Never tried it with dogs, but I have on horses. It seemed to work fairly well. That was a lot of years ago, but I have recollections that the aloe needed to be very pure...

Have you considered the use of glucosamine and chondroitin supplements though? They're generally considered to be very helpful for arthritic joints.

Ok so this may sound stupid, but I have an aloe vera plant at home lol if I rubbed some of the um juices on her, do you think it would work? I assume that would be the purest you could get.

I havent tried much with her because Im working on getting her to lose weight right now--thats a big part of the problem, she's overweight.

Mmmm - no idea really. I guess the gel is just concentrated juices. Hard to see how it can do a great deal of harm anyway, even if it doesn't help.

The glucosamine is worth a try though. You can use exactly the same stuff as you'd find in the supermarket or pharmacy for people. I don't think it's particularly expensive. Certainly getting some of that weight off will help her out a lot - but so too would easing the joints help her get enough exercise to lose the weight (what a cycle, hmm?).

Thats exactly why its taking me so long to get the weight off of her. I cant run her, but she also cant go for long walks because she's fallen a few times. Its been a long process.

Is the glucosamine in pill form or what? And would i give one pill a day?? Im going to keep doing some looking.. Ive come across a lot of holistic stuff and Im going to start trying it because we've been to the vet numerous times for her allergies and the stuff they give us works at first, but then its like she becomes immune to it and her itching starts up again.

I just did a search and came across a site that suggested 200mg/lb of body weight or 1 500mg tablet per every 25 lbs. Does this sound about right?

Very likely :) But the aloe was discussed as a topical treatment, and glucosamine as an oral one (the pills, biscuits, etc).

The glucosamine works great!!! My older dog blew her knee out last summer the vet suggested glucosamine (which ever is cheape human or pet form) After a few weeks she was like a spring chicken again!!!! He said for some reason they found out it works better in dogs than humans. I got the capsules and broke them open and sprinkled it on her food, the pills she was to smart would pick them out and not eat them, unles I crushed them up pretty good. Good luck, it does help.
