I have a 1-1/2 yr old boxer named Rocky and late last night i noticed that he had bumps all over his body. I called my vet and he told me that it was probablly a food allergy and to give him Benadryl. This morning when we got up he was worse and so i rushed him to the dr. They gave him a shot and are now keeping him for 36hrs for observation. I am just curious do other boxer owners struggle w/the allergy issuses as much as i do? Any extra info is much appriciated.

I haven't had any allergy issues with my boxer, buy my little terrier has had severe allergy issues over the years. He currently is on a special food diet and takes daily pills for his allergies. He has both food and contact (grass) allergies. He generally doesn't break out in hives, however. He tends to lose hair. (nothing like a bald dog) If you look at my gallery, there are a few pictures of him---he doesn't have that great a coat to begin with!

I have a friend whose boxers have allergies, though. They have broken out in hives when bitten by insects--several times.

Hope your little guy is okay!

Kaylie has pretty severe allergies. She has broken out in hives so badly that she was throwing up. The ER vet said her whole body, inside and out was inflamed. After that incident, we had her allergy tested. She has food and environmental allergies, and she's very reactive to insect bites. She is now on a special food and she gets allergy shots. During the fall and spring she takes Benadryl regularly. When it's really bad she also gets Prednisone. Unfortunately, one of the things she is highly allergic to is mosquitos. There is no getting away from them here.

There are a lot of people on Boxerworld who's boxers have allergies. You can do a search and find tons of information.

Good luck.

My boxer Ashley had skin problems when she was a puppy. Had to use a sterile type shampoo on her every three days until she was over 6 months. Also later found out can only use certain shampoos on her, oatmeal or fruit based, otherwise she breaks out in bumps all over. Then a couple weeks ago my male Noah got into something because his whole face puffed out, then within days bumps were all over his body. Vet said anything could really of caused it, maybe something he got into, because we didnt find anything showing he was bit by something. They gave him a steroid shot and told me if it did not go down in a couple days to use the benadryl. Also Ashleys face will get swollen once in awhile and they had given me some anahistamines to give her, and it goes down right away. Also if your boxer ever gets bumps under their chin, it could be because they are allergic to their bowls (if they plastic) and you'll have to use stainless steel ones. I was told that boxers can have allergies and sensitive skin problems, but I suppose all kinds of dogs can.

Hammer had this happen December 30th. He got hives first and within an hour his poor smooshy face was all swelled up. I rushed him to the vet, he got a prednisone injection and stayed there for only 3 hours. He was his normal self when we picked him up, but we kept him on Benedryl for 24 hours to be sure.

We think Hammers reaction was to a bite of some kind since we hadn't made any changes to his diet, and he hasn't had any problems since.

We have had allergy issues with Junior since we bought him at a year. We've had him for 9 months now and we were taking him to the vet almost monthly during summer months. He has gotten a swollen face to the point where he couldn't see out of his eye and we had to rush him to the Emergency Vet and they gave him a steriod shot and some benedryl. Then we brought him to the dog park where he managed to get a parasite. He was then put on Cephalexin, which really helps! Not too long ago he broke out again and I just called the script in for the Cephalexin and it was taken care of within a few days. Unfortunatly, Boxers are very sensitive. My vet told me to give him Benedryl daily. Thank goodness its winter here in MN now and everything is frozen and dead, so right now no worries. Hope your little guy gets better!!

Hi, We have a 19wk female boxer, Sophie. We woke one morning and she was covered in welts and bumps but showed no signs of discomfort. (What a woman!) :D She got worse while I was getting things ready to head to her Dr. She got 2 shots and the benedryl to give every 6-8 hrs. They lasted for 4 days. But she still showed no discomfort, just looked horrible. Her vet says most probably a spider bite as we had not changed anything in her diet or living quarters. There is a pic of Sophie with the welts and bumps in her gallery if you would like to compare. Patty and Sophie PS...Sophie says it will be ok:cool:

Mollie broke out with hives suddenly after playing in the yard one day a few months ago..we gave her benadryll...it did get worse before it got better..seemed to last for about 3 days. It hasn't happened again. Poor baby she looked miserable. the benadryll helped but it wiped her out.:(
