Two year old developes allergies

My Sydney is now two years old and just started having allergy attacks. Her first attack was a week after we brought a new boxer puppy home. At first we thought it might be the puppy food, as we were feeding him (puppy) a different brand. To this time we still do not know what is bothering her. The first attack was a bad one, swollen face, eyes closed, muzzle raw, and covered in hives. A couple weeks of prednizone took care of it but the hives have come back quite a few times since. I just give Syd two benedryl caplets each time I see the hives starting to appear and it seems that her muzzle if finally starting to heal allowing the hair to grow back. You are right though, I think the hives bother me more than they bother her.

hope this helps

My 4 1/2 mo old Boxer had an allergic reaction also, it was food induced (vet say's) I chandged his food due to bad gas, benadryl helped him but not my nerves. I watch his food, treat and environment. so far he hasn't had any other hives. But he still has alot of thining hair, Im using a oatmeal shampoo for baths. I feed Bradie Nutro nc puppy food (wheat free) I'm the manager of a pet store and reserched alot of food, i want the best for my bud, my only suggestion for you is to watch for bi products and corn this can cause alot of allergic reactions.

Our Rocky had them too!

Our Rocky is 9 months old today and he had hives for months. Had a steroid shot and lived on benadryl . We tried all different kinds of dog food ..From the best to the medium grades. Finally we tried Nutro Natural Choice Ultra Adult Dog Food, and so far that did the trick! No more hives and his duty has been great...The better tasting the dog food he was wanting to eat it after it came out ... if you know what I mean .. UCK! :(
So far he has been growing like a weed "Thank God" . We know how frustrating it is and it seems never to end, but it will just take time and alot of stressful effort. Just hang in there you have alot of company.
And of course you know they are worth every bit of it!! J&Mary

Well, the way it was explained to me was like this:
Firstly, we can ALL (people AND dogs) develop an allergy to almost ANYTHING, at ANYTIME.
(I used to LOVE Fendi perfume. After a couple of years, I started getting small rashes on my neck! Found out I had developed an allergy to something in Fendi. Stopped wearing it, it went away)
When you see bumps and hives on your dog, the FIRST thing you think of, is their food! Because, what they are EATING is probably the biggest source of allergins, to our pets.
But there are OTHER ways to have a flare-up of symptoms.
They can INHALE something, (such as carpet stuff, you sprinkle, and pollen, in the air.)
They can CONTACT with something, like grass or plants, etc.
If you are feeding a premium quality food, with NO corn products in it, I would first try the Benedryl. If THIS works and stops the itching, you KNOW the allergy ISN"T food related. In that case, I wouldn't fool around with trying to change what they are eating. I would invest in some cortosone cream, to use on the areas that have bad scratching, or bumps. And, I would try bathing with a very mild, soothing shampoo.

Whenever Cleo has had bumps under her skin we have given her a couple of tablets of Piriton one per day, and they always work for her. Our Vet reccommended them, and you can buy them over the counter at the Chemist/Pharmacy.

Xena Has Vaccination Allergies!

It was so freaky when we got Xena and took her for her booster shot and found out she has terrible vaccination reactions. So she does take benedryl before her shots and steriods in and IV too preshot and the vet observes her for awhile after the shots. We are going to be happy when the number of vaccines she needs decreases and the time between having to get them increases. So far so good with foods. She does well on premium brands. As soon as she is at least 8 months old I plan on switching her back onto Innovo EVO dog food. She loved it and her coat and muscle tone and her energy was so much better. But since it is so high in protien we are just waiting to get her older so she doesn't develop any longterm effects from too rapid of bone growth during her puppy period. She is otherwise healthy. Good luck with your dog's allergy problems. Hope they get better soon.

I just switched Bugzy to a new food from Wellness, I think it's called simple solutions. I had him on their fish and potato among others and this so far is helping the most. His paws aren't as red and he just seems to be doing better altogether. It's 40 bucks a bag though but if it works it's worth a try. Good luck!
